⭐ This time 2 weeks ago we were exhibiting at the Sydney Work Health and Safety Show connecting with people from all industries on all things Psychological health and safety! Here's a little reflection of our time at the show ⭐ What stood out to us this year was the level of conversation, curiosity and concern about Psychological health and safety and psychosocial hazards in the workplace. Leaders just wanted to know how to get started, discuss what they have tried to date and discuss ways in which they can support their people best whilst meeting their compliance obligations. Thanks to everyone who came by our booth and we look forward to keeping these conversations going! #SafetyCulture #WorkplaceSafety #TogetherForSafety #SafetyChampions

As we close out National Safe Work Month, let’s reflect on the week 4 topic of musculoskeletal injuries (MSI's) and their connection with the Psychological Health of your people — the unseen challenges that can sideline your best talent! MSI's are injuries that often stem from overuse or sudden strain however stressful environments, high workloads, and poor support systems contribute to both mental and physical strain, making employees more vulnerable to MSI's. There are key links between Psychological Health and MSI's: 😫 Increased Physical Tension: Mental stress leads to muscle tension, fatigue, and poor posture, all of which can contribute to repetitive strain and other MSI's. 👀 Lowered Attention and Focus: Psychological stress can impact cognitive function, reducing focus and coordination. This can lead to accidental movements or improper handling of equipment, increasing the risk of physical injury. 💻 Compensatory Physical Behaviours: Workers under stress may adopt poor ergonomic practices or work harder to compensate for lower productivity, which can increase physical strain and the likelihood of MSI's. 🤯 Prolonged Exposure to Adverse Conditions: Challenges with Psychological Health can lead to longer working hours, repetitive tasks without sufficient breaks, and reduced use of safety measures — all risk factors for MSI's. 😒 Absenteeism & Presenteeism: Poor Psychological Health can increase absenteeism and presenteeism, where employees work despite illness or injury, often aggravating physical injuries like MSI's over time. 📊 MSI's were responsible for half of all serious workers' compensation claims last year and Psychological claims have increased by 30%. Addressing stressors in the workplace through psychosocial role based risk assessments, mental health support, and ergonomic/job design and consultation can reduce the incidence of MSI's and improve overall wellbeing and productivity. ☕ Our team gathered for a SafeTea to participate in National Safe Work Month ☕ It was a warm and insightful conversation about how we can keep our workplace safe and supportive for everyone, whether in the office or working remotely. Given we are supporting other workplaces everyday with their safety, we still managed to come up with some great ideas! Discussing both physical and psychological safety is so important in building a culture where everyone feels valued and safe, particularly when your role is supporting others. We invite every workplace to join us in this initiative and have meaningful discussions about safety and what it means to the organisation and its people. 🗨️ Together, we can learn, grow, and support the wellbeing of everyone in our workplace and community. Let’s keep this vital conversation going! #SafeTeaSession #SafetyConversation #TeamSafety #SafeWorkMonth

📣 it’s the end of week 3 Safe Work Month, and this week we revisited one of the WHS fundamentals - proactive risk management! Proactive risk management means thinking about what could go wrong if someone encounters a hazard and how likely that is to happen and as Safe Work point out, it doesn't happen by us guessing what might happen! Here's how we've partnered with workplaces to implement Safe Work's best practice approach: * Proactively manage WHS risk. It is not a set and forget process - Gather data, seek data via surveys and other means (it's everywhere), walk around and observe what people are doing and saying, add multiple reporting channels, consider role-based risks in recruitment and throughout the life cycle. * Genuinely consult with workers throughout the risk management process. Workers have important 'on the job' insights and experience that can help to identify hazards and make better decisions about how to manage them. It's amazing what people share particularly with external facilitators - and no it's not all about the "Tea"! They have great ideas that would make all the difference to them making them feel safe, heard and valued = business success. * Train and support workers to identify and report hazards and understand the control measures in place to keep them safe. Even when you have done your annual compliance training run quarterly Safety Circles, lunch n learns, safety road shows, leader awareness sessions, support sessions and the list goes on. What PROACTIVE strategy works well in your workplace? #wellbeing #safetyatwork #workplace #riskmanagement #consultation

It's Week 2 of National Safe Work Month and the topic is all about Psychosocial Hazards. Today is also World Mental Health Day so today we’re looking closely at the mental, social and emotional challenges at work and how to handle the risks they bring. This Gallup article calls out the key issue "Australian workplaces are facing a serious mental health crisis. A growing number of employees are exposed to psychosocial hazards that increase their risk of developing work-related psychological injuries". In fact, In 2021-2022, mental health conditions accounted for 9% of all serious work-related claims, marking a 37% increase since 2017-2018. And it's getting worse... We spend a significant portion of our lives at work and maybe some of you reading this don't need to imagine working somewhere where people feel anxious, fearful, confused and sick at the thought of stepping foot in the door. Unfortunately many of you are living in this reality. And this reality does not leave us when we clock off and walk out the door - we carry it home and it permeates out through our families and our relationships and it affects our physical health until something has to give. It's time we prioritise mental health and psychological health and safety just as much as physical safety. With nearly half of Australia’s workforce experiencing bullying and harassment and psychological injuries on the rise, the need for action is urgent. This isn't just about compliance; it's about fostering environments where employees can thrive. We don't need anymore evidence to prove that when people thrive, business thrives. Today Leader we want you to think about how you: ◾Foster a culture of psychological safety that actively identifies and enhances wellbeing by proactively addressing psychosocial hazards. ◾ Empower frontline leaders with the resources and support they need to thrive so that their teams can thrive ◾ Encourage others to take ownership and champion a positive and safe work environment. Together, let's advocate for healthier and more supportive work environments because safety is everyone's business! https://loom.ly/0GPMjTM #MentalHealth #WorkplaceCulture #PsychosocialSafety #Leadership #EmployeeWellbeing #psychosocialhazards

It's the end of week 1 for National Safe Work Month which was all about WHS fundamentals, so let’s unpack one of the fundamentals of effective WHS practices - Consultation! Do you have the opportunity to GENUINELY consult with your workers? Workplace Consultation means asking for and considering employees’ views when making decisions. It involves providing opportunities for your people to share views, considering those views and informing your people of the outcomes in a timely and appropriate manner. Creating a space for genuine consultation means encouraging your people to: - Ask questions about health and safety whenever they need clarity - Share their concerns and report any issues they encounter - Bring their unique knowledge and experiences to the table - Offer safety recommendations that can make a difference - Get involved in the problem-solving process together. Ensuring a safe and healthy workplace is a basic right for all workers, regardless of occupation or industry. Remember, safety is everyone’s business!
