BackTrack keeps kids alive, out of jail and chasing their hopes and dreams.
About us
Based in Armidale NSW, BackTrack supports vulnerable young people who are having a hard time and are falling through the cracks of a mainstream system that doesn't meet their complex needs. BackTrack founder Bernie Shakeshaft saw these young people being left behind in our society and knew they needed holistic, flexible and long-term support to get their lives back on track. With a shed, a passionate crew of volunteers and a mission to keep kids alive, out of jail and chasing their hopes and dreams, he established BackTrack in 2006. Seventeen years later, BackTrack has become nationally recognised for our unique, proven approach to engaging, educating, training and employing vulnerable young people. BackTrack helps young people develop work and life skills, engage in learning, prepare for employment and participate in their community. We achieve this through a combination of educational, training and diversionary activities, transitional employment through our social enterprise, residential accommodation and flexible, wraparound youth work.

There’s nothing more important than our young people’s wellbeing. On #worldmentalhealthday we want to share again, the Circle of Courage principles that all of BackTrack’s work is based on. The Circle of Courage is from First Nations wisdom in Canada and states that these 4 quadrants need to be in balance for a person - or a community - to access wellbeing and thrive: BELONGING - you have to feel part of something. MASTERY - you have to be learning something, anything. INDEPENDENCE - you have to have a say in your life and take responsibility. GENEROSITY - you have to give back. At BackTrack we’ve been living these values from day one, long before we knew what to call them. It’s why we start each day in the circle, with a check in on how we’re feeling, we meet every kid where they’re at and we help them find their own path and ways to contribute back into their community ⭕️🐾 #backtrack #worldmentalhealthday #circleofcourage #youthwork

There’s not much that gives us more hope, than watching the older young people who have been through our programs, now teaching and mentoring the new ones coming through. That’s a transformative cycle right there. We pay tribute to our BackTrack Works legends and alumni youth workers who have not only turned their own lives around, but are giving back to countless others like nobody else can. Role modelling and connection is everything and you make our circle the special place it is 🐾⭕️ #generosity #backtrack #livedexperience #youthwork

Our own Matt Lynch has just been recognised in the #nswvolunteerawards as the New England / Northern Inland Volunteer of the Year! This is so well deserved after a lifetime of service and decades of volunteering his time and unique expertise to us here at BackTrack. Matt and his wife, Lynda, have done more for our town’s young people than it’s possible to put in any application. Thanks so much to the award judges and The Centre for Volunteering for recognising his singular contribution - from getting rookie police on side when he was Inspector of Police in Armidale back when BackTrack was founded, to his current volunteer duties as daily driver, cook, cleaner, mentor and all round favourite Uncle to countless BackTrack kids. Matt has changed the game when it comes to how police and young people treat each other in Armidale - that changes lives and is so sorely needed across the country. Congratulations Lynchie you legend 🙌🏼🐾 https://lnkd.in/gMxDJfxP

A beautiful thing indeed. So proud of the incredible man you’ve become Zac 🙌🏼🐾
✴ “How can you let your light shine, if you don’t even know you’ve got one?” Our heartful thanks to Zac Craig from the inspiring BackTrack Youth Works team for sharing his personal journey at last week’s launch of the report “Supporting Children and Families to Flourish” from the James Martin Institute for Public Policy, in collaboration with the Centre for Relational Care. Zac’s story, and his work supporting young people who have experienced trauma, powerfully demonstrates how real relationships and connection can offer kids a sense of belonging, direction and hope for the future. As Zac reminds us, “These kids need someone who cares. They need someone who will sit down and listen.” Watch the full video of the launch, including Zac’s speech, here >> https://lnkd.in/eihvfa_M Access the report here >> https://lnkd.in/g8gq6--n 🖥 Join us for a webinar on Thursday 12 September from 10.00am-11.30am (AEST) for an overview of the report, followed by Q&As. Our Founder, Bernie Shakeshaft and original BackTrack boy, Zac, were pleased to be part of this report launch yesterday - recommending a new, relationship-based approach to caring for vulnerable young people in NSW. Check out all the details on the report and an upcoming webinar at the Centre for Relational Care 🐾
⭐ New vision for the NSW child protection system released today ⭐ For those who care about a better future for vulnerable children and young people, please check out this report released today by the James Martin Institute for Public Policy, in close collaboration with the Centre for Relational Care, on Supporting Children and Families to Flourish >> https://lnkd.in/g8gq6--n The report offers a new paradigm – a shift from an overburdened system focused on 'report, investigate, and remove' to one where children are protected by fostering strong family and community relationships. It's also about children in out-of-home care having meaningful, lasting connections with the carers who are raising them. At the Centre for Relational Care, we call this approach a “Child Connection System”. Key areas for action include the need for changes to laws, regulations, policies and processes to dismantle bureaucratic barriers and create a care system centred on relationships. This is not about tweaking our current system; it’s about reimagining the entire sector, based on the most up-to-date understanding of trauma, neuroscience and lived experiences. This report is the product of extensive collaboration with many experts from academia, government and the wider practice community, in close collaboration with NSW Department of Communities and Justice and the Centre for Relational Care. A sincere thanks to all the contributors for sharing their time and expertise. 🙏 💐 Moving forward, the Centre for Relational Care will continue to work alongside stakeholders in collaborative co-design of this reimagined care system, guided by the wisdom of lived experience. 🖥 We are co-hosting a webinar with JMI on Thursday 12 September from 10.00am-11.30am. This session is open to all interested stakeholders and will include a discussion of the report, followed by Q&As. You can register here >>https://lnkd.in/gP8FjtsJ A huge thank you to the team at JMI for going above and beyond in undertaking this critical research towards a new approach. This report tells us what the future could look like but does not deliver us there. There will be multiple rounds of regulatory, legislative and policy reforms. But our first and most important task is to start this new orientation with conviction, knowing we will need to stay committed to real change. Let’s collectively seize this opportunity for a fundamental reset of the child protection and out-of-home care system. #childconnectionsystem Ashleigh Dunstan Vafa Ghazavi Hannah Lobb Jordan Taylor Simona Tomevska Andreas Kaufmann Anthony Dursi Libby Hackett Valerie Braithwaite Judy Cashmore Lynne McPherson BJ Newton, PhD Liz Reimer Mandy Young Bernie Shakeshaft Rumbi Mabambe Martin Stewart-Weeks Lisa Charet

Look out Sydney - here we come! The Paws Up pack are on the road and bound for the Dog Lovers Festival at the Sydney Showgrounds this weekend. Head down and meet the crew, with some of our beautiful dogs and their expert young handlers showing in the high jump events, making a splash in the long jump and speed retrieve pool and more. The Paws Up program is an integral part of all of our work at BackTrack - helping our young people connect and experience belonging, mastery, independence and generosity. Come and say g’day Sydney! 🐾

Backtrack’s youth work methodology is based on the Circle of Courage model - focusing on Belonging, Mastery, Independence and Generosity. When these 4 quadrants are in balance we can access healing, growth and wellbeing. Our Paws Up program provides opportunities in all 4 of these areas and the outreach component hones in on Generosity. Lately - as well as regularly visiting remote primary schools with the dogs to connect and read with younger children, our Paws Up pack have been visiting a local Aged Care Facility. Before the first visit, our kids were nervous and not sure what to expect. On their return, young Boyd pumped his chest with his fist, ‘that felt GOOD’. When we give back, we give something so important to ourselves - and these young people (and their very special hounds) have a hell of alot to give! 🐾🐾 #pawsupforever #backtrack #circleofcourage #generosity #givingback

The day you get your L’s is an important milestone for all young people. But at BackTrack it hits different. We can’t tell you how proud we are of this guy - who has worked so hard from a tough starting block, to slowly build up his confidence and his literacy to be able to pass the test this week. It’s something he didn’t think he’d ever be able to do. Our teacher has been working with him one on one, our social enterprise supervisor has been ensuring he has the flexibility he needs at work, our youth work and wellbeing team have been supporting wherever needed and his peers have been pumping up his tyres. Dom - you’ve made all our hearts beat stronger this week. It’s a wide open road mate. Congratulations 🙌🏼 #backtrack #wraparoundsupport #youthwork

It’s #takeyourdogtoworkday every day at BackTrack - whether the CEO likes it or not ☺️ Marcus Watson And actually, productivity and ergonomics aside, we know he’s 100% in, given how integral the BackTrack pack is to our work with young people. (Also - Whisky dog is our Union rep on the Board, so maybe this is a high stakes meeting?) 💼🐾 #woof #backtrack #takeyourdogtoworkday
