About us
Bookbot helps children build confidence in reading. As a child reads aloud, the app follows along and highlights and helps with missed and mispronounced words. We have augmented the eReader with accurate speech recognition and machine learning to learn how children learn. Our vision is to help any child build reading confidence and improve literacy for tomorrow’s world. We understand that learning to read is one of the most significant stages of life and it is challenging for everyone. The World Literacy Foundation says that over half of all children truly struggle to read; either through learning difficulties or a lack of support from a competent adult. As a result, today 1 in 5 adults globally still cannot read or write. Bookbot exists for the children who need a little extra practice but don’t want to feel like a burden, or who feel a bit shy and want to practice alone. We want to make reading fun and engaging for all, particularly for struggling readers and people with dyslexia. The team at Bookbot is now focused on using technology to help children build confidence in reading. We can’t do it alone and need help from wherever possible.

Bookbot's voice AI app is demonstrating twofold literacy improvements in Indonesia. AI-for-Education.org are supporting a research and development project to make the app work in Kiswahili. Adrian DeWitts joined us yesterday to share his progress - and we're blown away with the results! Adrian's also confident that we can bring this support to many low resource languages across the world much quicker than you might expect - with the right resources we could make the tech work for every language within five years! WE'RE LIVE!! Adrian DeWitts, founder of Bookbot is sharing the results of his work to make Bookbot - an app for improving oral reading fluency - work in Kiswahili. And the results are impressive!! One participant asked: 'How long would it take to reproduce in other languages?' And the answer was exciting to say the least: 'Potentially we could do each language from start to finish in six months (with enough resources we could do many languages at the same time) - we could augment our model by creating a dictionary of other languages with definitions, record 1000 lines with a voice artist (we recommend using a proper recording studio) for each language and integrate into the model. With the right investment this is something we could do very quickly - I think five years to do every language is realistic.' Bookbot is already achieving demonstrable results in Indonesia - a recent study showed twofold literacy improvements. So we're delighted to hear that this can be bought to low resource languages so quickly. Bookbot's work on this project is supported by AI-for-Education.org. We will release a package of evidence of what worked and what didn't from all of our pilots and R&D projects. We will also make all code developed available open-source. Only 1 in 5 children in Africa are taught in a language they speak at home. AI has the potential to change this - and we're supporting pilot and R&D projects that are: 1. Using voice AI to support oral reading fluency in Kiswahili; 2. Looking at AI textbook creation in mother tongue; 3. Assessing fluency and numeracy in three South African languages using gamified voice AI; and 4. Automating early grade reading assessments in isiXhosa language. This Thursday we're offering a technical session on: VOICE AI TECHNOLOGY with Adrian DeWitts, Founder of Bookbot 🗓 Thursday 11th July 2024 - 11am BST (GMT+1) 📌 Online, RSVP here: https://lnkd.in/dpCWRMsj The second in our series of informal technical conversations, or Coffee Chats! These chats focus on specific themes and are led by experts from our network. The idea is to support collaboration and knowledge sharing within our community and to bring the benefits to kids in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). This chat will be hosted by Adrian DeWitts of Bookbot. Bookbot use speech recognition to provide an interactive reading experience by listening to children read aloud, and providing them with instant feedback, as well as rewarding their progress. AI-for-Education.org are supporting a research project for Bookbot and University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM) to introduce Bookbot to Kiswahili and make it accessible in Tanzania. Come and join the conversation! #AIforEducation #AIinEducation Fab Inc Team4Tech MORE INFO: You can find more about our research project with Bookbot here: https://lnkd.in/dYRKhCcx
Today is Kiswahili Language Day! According to UNESCO, #Kiswahili is among the 10 most widely spoken languages in the world, with more than 230 million speakers. It is also one of the lingua franca in many countries within East, Central, and Southern Africa, as well as in the Middle East. 🔴 Yet, only 1 in 5 children in #Africa are taught in a language they speak at home (#GEMReport). While speaking a language that is not spoken in the classroom frequently holds back a child's learning, even partial use of the home language is associated with a higher probability of learners being literate. ✅ Did you know that many of our publications are translated into Kiswahili? Adrian DeWitts founded Bookbot to improve literacy in Indonesia and they achieved it - an efficacy study showed a twofold increase in reading fluency. Developing Bookbot for Bahasa Indonesia, including a speech recogniser, text-to-speech, and a library of books, took a couple of years. Supported by an AI-for-Education.org grant, Bookbot and University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM) aim to accomplish the same for Kiswahili in 3-6 months and explore how rapidly we can expand to other countries. The potential for Tanzania: We are open-sourcing the Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) and Text-to-Speech (TTS) to enable their utilisation in other Kiswahili EdTech software. The potential for other low- and middle-income countries: We will share all code developed and lessons learned - what worked and what didn't. Our aim is help developers replicate what works for local languages worldwide. SPOILER: The results so far are very encouraging! Come and join the conversation! 🗓 Wednesday 3rd July 2024 - 11am BST (GMT+1) 📌 Online RSVP here: https://lnkd.in/dpCWRMsj You can find more about our research project with Bookbot here: https://lnkd.in/dYRKhCcx #AIforEducation #AIinEducation #VoiceAI Fab Inc Team4Tech
