WEEKEND READ | Project #24 (Next Generation of Robust and Fire-resilient Light Gauge Steel Systems for Mid-Rise Buildings) is investigating the behaviour of light gauge steel (LGS) structures. Compared with other construction materials, LGS is easy to install and is resistant to rotting, shrinking and termite attack. However, the robustness of connections is an area requiring more research. A recently published paper by Jingsheng Zhou, Tai Thai and Tuan Ngo used finite element (FE) analysis to test the response of cold-formed steel screwed connection with clip angle under tension or shear. Their paper – Simplified finite element model for screwed connections with clip angle – is available on our website. WEEKEND READ | A construction company’s business model reflects how it operates – how it creates, delivers and captures value from and for customers and society. A recent paper by PhD student Yimin Li traces the evolution of business model concepts in the construction industry. This literature review by Yimin and his co-authors Duncan Maxwell and Robert Moehler integrates both a chronological review and bibliometric analysis to provide a historical perspective on how the business model concept was introduced in the construction industry. The paper proposes a new typology of construction business model innovation based on the nature of value creation mechanisms. Check out Yimin’s paper – Evolving business models in the construction industry: a comprehensive review and analysis. Reduce, reuse, recycle: Rethinking design approaches for a healthier future Transitioning to a circular economy is a key issue affecting Australia’s building industry. Moving from the ‘Take, make, waste’ model is challenging. For architects, what would it mean to practise within a circular economy model? For the latest edition of Architecture AU, guest editor Prof. Chris Knapp (Research Director at Building 4.0 CRC) collated expert perspectives on the various ways architects can embed circularity and propel the built environment towards a healthier future. Read about practical examples by CINARK - Center for Industrial Architecture, Built., Atelier Ten, Intelligent City, Hassell, Public Realm Lab, NMBW Architecture Studio, Finding Infinity, Neeson Murcutt Neille and Breathe. WEEKEND READ | Congratulations to Building 4.0 CRC PhD student Rozi Karimi. A new paper from Rozi and her co-authors Robert Moehler, Milad Baghalzadeh shishehgarkhaneh, Yihai Fang and Saima Ahmad, PhD explores social media’s impact on team dynamics and performance on construction sites. Here's the link: https://lnkd.in/gXfP-Ewy You can find out more about Rozi and her research on our website: https://lnkd.in/gq2FN2rv #constructionmanagement #socialmediause
🚀 New Research Published! 📢 We are excited to share our latest study, recently accepted for publication in IEEE Engineering Management Review! 📌 Despite being widely adopted—both formally and informally—on construction sites, social media's impact on team dynamics and performance remains an understudied phenomenon. 📌 In collaboration with Rozi Karimi Building 4.0 CRC and Monash Department of Civil Engineering, Milad Baghalzadeh shishehgarkhaneh, Yihai Fang, and Saima Ahmad, PhD, the research presents conflicting perspectives, making it difficult to establish a clear understanding of its role in project environments. 🔍 Our study addresses this gap by developing a conceptual model that highlights: ✅ How social media use (SMU) enhances team feedback, knowledge sharing, and member support ✅ The positive and negative mechanisms influencing team performance (TP) ✅ The critical moderating role of coordination (COO) in shaping these effects By integrating Social Exchange Theory and the Theory of Communication Visibility, our model provides a structured approach to navigating these diverse findings. The propositions we put forward serve as a foundation for future empirical validation, encouraging a more nuanced exploration of how digital communication transforms construction site management. 📖 Access the pre-publication version: https://lnkd.in/gwiSjgUP or DOI: 10.1109/EMR.2025.3539324 We welcome your thoughts and discussions! How do you see social media shaping collaboration and efficiency in construction projects? #ConstructionInnovation #SocialMediaUse #TeamPerformance #KnowledgeSharing #ProjectManagement #EngineeringResearch #DigitalTransformation

WEEKEND READ | A new report from Building 4.0 CRC highlights how new mixed reality (MR) technologies can help address challenges assembling prefabricated building components. Lighthouse Project #13 (Mixed Reality Carpentry Demonstration) integrated the Twinbuild MR tool developed by Fologram with Ynomia’s tracking technology for the real-time assembly of a complex timber pavilion at the Building 4.0 CRC Annual Conference 2023. Students from Holmesglen Institute received a hands-on demonstration of the MR technology, including an introduction to its features and capabilities, and instructions on how to use it for assembly tasks. Using these technologies meant construction components could be effectively tracked and visualised. This approach allowed students to start constructing the timber pavilion in less than 2 hours, a task that would typically take up to 3 days. The feedback from students showed the MR technologies increased engagement, and allowed students to rapidly develop skills and understand complex carpentry techniques. NEW PROJECT | Space cooling in buildings consumes a lot of energy, contributing to high operational costs and high greenhouse case emissions. New Building 4.0 CRC partner Taphcore® has developed an innovative Phase Change Material (PCM) product that aims to reduce cooling costs, improve energy efficiency and lower greenhouse gas emissions. This lightweight construction material absorbs and releases energy to provide heating and cooling; it also complies with fire safety requirements. It can be panelised to replace conventional wall, ceiling or floor linings. Our new project (#76) will design and install a PCM radiant cooling system in a purpose-built full-scale testing facility, and then monitor performance.
