Big news, Islington Council has approved the plans to transform an industrial site into a 200,000 sq. ft science and technology building! Designed as a response to the needs of the life science and technology sector, York Way celebrates the opportunity to establish a new world-class hub for innovation and science. The building sits within the Knowledge Quarter of the Kings Cross area, neighbouring with surrounding communities such as Coal Drops Yard. Atelier Ten has collaborated with KPF to design façades that balance solar control and daylight penetration. This approach ensures internal environments are visually and thermally comfortable while significantly reducing reliance on mechanical cooling. Additionally, the design team's innovative arched podium design unlocks opportunities for low embodied carbon solutions, by using arches instead of inefficient transfer beams while optimising GIA. We're also proud of our add-on exhaust heat recovery system proposal, which captures heat from the contaminated exhaust air stream and redirects it back to the LTHW system of the building allowing such heat to be utilised elsewhere within the building. Atelier Ten provided Environmental design, Sustainability, MEP and specialist lighting for the scheme. We're thrilled to announce that planning for the National Centre for Music, located below Calton Hill in Edinburgh, has been approved! The new National Centre for Music (NCM) will become the main tenant of the former Royal High School, and manage it as a cultural institution, which as much as possible will be open to the public. The NCM will seek to build on and energise the performance, audience and learning opportunities the revitalised buildings will make available. It will create cultural and educational partnerships, manage concerts and outreach programmes, and seek to celebrate and build on the rich tradition of music and performance throughout Scotland. Atelier Ten is delivering the building services, environmental design and energy analysis for this project. We are excited to bring this visionary project to life, providing a dynamic space for artists, educators, and music lovers from around the world.

Looking forward to the West Conservatory at Longwood Gardens to open in November. Atelier Ten worked with the engineers to simulate natural ventilation scenarios to select tolerable conditions for both the plantings and the visitors. Nico Kienzl, founding director of Atelier Ten’s New York City office, says the “passive strategies have to carry the day,” though there is some perimeter heating and fans, especially to minimize fogged-up windows in the winter. "Illuminated River's smart LED technologies provide a more long-term sustainable solution for lighting the Thames at night." Learn more about this from the Google Arts & Culture online exhibition on Creating a Better Lighting Environment for the Thames. Atelier Ten's lighting team worked to update 9 bridges on the Thames with dynamic lighting covering 2.5 miles in length – this is the longest public art commission in the world; we worked with the Illuminated River Foundation, artist Leo Villareal and architects Lifschutz Davidson Sandilands. "By developing an overarching framework for lighting in each borough to guide street lighting and coordinate lighting from public and private sources, the quality of London’s lighting would hugely improve."
