‘Helping families through the hardest decisions’ – A Day in the Life of a Palliative Care Nurse Practitioner. As a Palliative Care Nurse Practitioner, Nikki supports patients and families through some of the toughest moments of their lives. A big part of her role is Advance Care Planning—helping people document their wishes so their loved ones aren’t left making impossible decisions. ‘I recently cared for a 64-year-old patient who had suffered a devastating stroke. She was unconscious in ICU, and her family was overwhelmed. But her partner arrived with her Advance Care Plan in hand. She had written: ‘Living well to me means being able to communicate with my loved ones and to be independent living on the farm.’ She had made it clear that if she couldn’t return to that level of independence, she wanted comfort care and to donate her organs.’ Her children were heartbroken, but knowing what she wanted made it easier. Her plan allowed her to have the death she wanted, and it gave her family peace. ‘Many people think Advance Care Planning is just for the elderly, but sudden illnesses and accidents can happen at any time. Without a plan, families often struggle with guilt, questioning if they made the right call. My role is to make sure patients have a voice, even when they can’t speak for themselves.’ For nurses looking for a rewarding career in palliative care, this is what it’s about, advocating for patients, guiding families, and ensuring that both living and dying are done with dignity. #TeamCHS #PalliativeCare #AdvanceCarePlanning #NursePractitioner #HealthCareCareers

🔎 The Power of poetry in health care At Canberra Health Services, we know that innovation in health care isn’t just about technology—it’s also about human connection. Our collaboration with the University of Canberra (UC) is a perfect example of how interdisciplinary approaches can transform patient care. Dr Jenny McFarlane #TeamCHS’ art curator and Dr Owen Bullock (UC) recently completed a pilot program, funded by the Canberra Hospital Foundation, testing how creative writing could help rehabilitation patients at University of Canberra Hospital. Their research highlights key challenges faced by patients, including boredom, processing trauma, and reconnecting with the world outside hospital walls. Jenny shared how the CHS Poetry and Wellness Program was designed to restore a patient’s sense of self: ‘There is a considerable body of research that demonstrates the importance of the arts as an adjunct to clinical treatment. The arts offer a way of locating, creating, and testing new personal narratives reflective of a subtly reshaped identity.’ Patient feedback was overwhelmingly positive: ✅ ‘Made me feel more like a person (me) and less like a patient.’ ✅ A pilot participant has since published his own poetry collection, turning his stroke recovery journey into an awareness campaign. Of course, delivering creative writing workshops in a hospital environment came with challenges. Some patients were just beginning to use mobility aids, others had difficulty adjusting to the structure of writing. Jenny and Owen found that slowing down the sessions and making materials accessible helped overcome these barriers. For health care professionals interested in integrating the arts into therapeutic practice, a career with #TeamCHS offers research opportunities and ethics-approved collaborations that allow for real-world impact and publication. Health care is evolving, and so are the ways we support recovery. How else can creative arts enhance patient care? Let’s start the conversation. #HealthCareInnovation #ArtsInHealth #InterdisciplinaryCare #PatientCare #HealthCareCareers #JoinUs
