  • Dream of a short commute to work? Well Shauna just might have the shortest in all of Queensland! 🚶♀️ As a new graduate nurse at Mornington Island Hospital, she lives a speedy 30 seconds from work. And that's not the only benefit of working on Mornington Island! There's also the tight-knit community, the beautiful surrounds and the opportunity to gain experience in a wide variety of nursing areas. 🌟 Shauna is one of 24 new graduate nurses who joined the team at @North West Health and Hospital Service late last year. The 12-month graduate program allows new nurses to learn on the job and transition from academic learning into professional practice. Experienced staff come alongside the new grads to provide support and mentorship. Thank you for serving the wonderful Mornington Island community, Shauna! ❤️

  • Meet Sean—a Clinical Nurse Consultant, making a huge impact by supporting some of our most vulnerable patients. 🚨 Working alongside the Queensland Ambulance Service, Sean and his team are at the heart of preventing and resolving mental health crises, reaching out to around 200 patients every month. They provide specialised mental health knowledge, rapid assessment and intervention, making sure all patients have timely access to care and support. For Sean, it's not just about providing treatment, it’s about listening. 🥰 'I take the time to slow things down, stay engaged, and give people my full attention.' In his eyes, every patient is more than a case. The goal isn’t just to ease pressure on our emergency departments; it’s to make sure that people can remain safe and supported in the comfort of their own homes instead of being removed. Thank you, Sean, for being there to listen and support those who are vulnerable. We are so lucky to have someone as kind and caring as you be part of the team. ❤️ Want to help make a difference like Sean? • Bundaberg Hospital’s has celebrated their first water birth. 💙 Acting Midwifery Unit Manager Bettina Aikenhead said the birth was a proud moment for the team, especially for the postgraduate midwife who led the delivery. 👏 'It was amazing to see one of our postgraduate midwives, trained in water birth, supporting a mum through this experience. Hands-on training like this is so valuable and will set us up for success in the new Bundaberg Hospital,' Bettina said. The inflatable birth pool is helping midwives develop their skills ahead of the move to the new Bundaberg Hospital, which will feature two birthing rooms with permanent baths. 🏥 'Water immersion during labour offers incredible benefits, including pain relief and relaxation. Many mums have told us they want this option, and we’re proud to provide it,' said Wide Bay Hospital and Health Service Chief Executive Debbie Carroll. Right now, water births are available at Bundaberg Hospital when specially trained midwives are on shift, but the team is working to expand access as more staff complete their training. 'Our midwives are passionate about providing personalised, supportive care. Expanding water birth options is just one of the ways we’re responding to what families want,' Bettina said. A huge shoutout to the incredible midwives leading the way in maternity care at Bundaberg Hospital! 👏 Via: @Wide Bay Hospital and Health Service #HealthHero

  • Our Virtual Emergency Care Service (VECS) team increased their availability during ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred to provide virtual care to Queenslanders from the safety of their own homes. 📱 Without being asked, the team of doctors, nurses and admin staff volunteered to extend the service's opening hours to operate 24/7 during the weather event. 🤗 VECS is an online service providing access to unplanned and emergency care. It's available for anyone in Queensland with conditions that need immediate attention but aren't life-threatening. Jen, a clinical nurse at both VECS and the Princess Alexandra Hospital (PAH), is one of the dedicated staff who stepped up to help during last weekend. 🙌 'The whole team, from nurses, doctors and admin, went above and beyond during the crisis. Everyone took on extra hours. We reshuffled rosters and swapped shifts, and everyone adapted their personal and work lives to meet the demands,' she said. 'On a normal day, we receive anywhere from 90 to 120 calls. During TC and ex-TC Alfred, we received more than double that volume each day.' The most common conditions the team assessed were skin conditions, abdominal pain, injuries, respiratory illnesses, infections, and paediatric presentations. Most of the VECS clinicians worked from home doing double shifts during the cyclone. Some even provided virtual emergency care while dealing with gale-force winds, rain and power outages themselves. 🌀 Now the worst is over, VECS is back to the normal operating hours of 8am to 10pm from today (Saturday 15 March). We want to say a big thank you to Jen and the VECS team for the tireless work they do to keep our community safe and healthy. We appreciate you all! ❤️ VECS is a Queensland-wide service and is free for Medicare card holders. • Meet Amarni—a registered nurse at Logan Hospital's children's ward. ✨ Each day, Amarni provides compassionate care to children of all ages, helping them through some of their toughest times. She works closely with a team of doctors, specialists and support staff, ensuring each patient receives the best possible care and that all aspects of their health are carefully managed. A big part of her role involves administering medications — something that requires precision and attention to detail, as they’re required at all hours throughout her shift. From the smallest hand to the biggest heart; every moment counts. 🥰 Thank you Amarni for all you do! Metro South Health

  • Registered nurses Sarah and Beth, and their colleagues at 13 HEALTH, didn't let ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred stop them from keeping Queenslanders safe and healthy. 🙌 You can phone 13 HEALTH (13 43 25 84) for health advice and talk to a registered nurse 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Nurses like Sarah and Beth will talk to you about your symptoms and help you find the right care. ☎️ As last weekend's severe weather event unfolded, calls to 13 HEALTH steadily increased. Their busiest day was Friday 7 March, when 1,536 calls were received. Some people called about running out of their medications, others about wound infection, and many to find out which services were open. 'In a tropical cyclone, our job doesn't stop. There are all the usual calls but also the extra stress on the Queensland population that we can help with,' Sarah said. 'We all just went into prep mode and rallied together, picking up extra shifts for our colleagues who were flooded in, and staying overnight at work when necessary. There was an attitude of "we're going to do the best we can".' The team at 13 HEALTH worked tirelessly, utilising their high-quality clinical skills and knowledge of the health system to support patients with their varied healthcare needs. Since the event was ever evolving, they also had to keep up to date with the availability of health services in order to refer patients accordingly. While they don't do the job for the praise, Sarah and Beth both noted how lovely it was that people were grateful they were available during the severe weather. 'We're nurses, so we do what we do because that's who we are. But to get that feedback from people was really reassuring. It made it all worth it to be out in the storm and away from my family; I knew I was serving a purpose,' Beth said. Thank you, Sarah, Beth and all the 13 HEALTH team for your dedication! We so appreciate your service to Queensland. 🥰 📷 Beth (L) and Sarah (R).

  • Did you know that 400 tonnes of linen is cleaned and delivered across South East Queensland each week? That’s roughly 1,000 trolleys a day! 🤯 Behind this remarkable operation is Kerry, one of the more than 240 linen service officers working tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure our health facilities stay equipped with fresh linen. Based at The Prince Charles Hospital laundry, Kerry and his colleagues sort, process, iron, fold, and pack clean linen for delivery to Queensland Health facilities, ensuring they're crisp, clean and ready for patients. At 73, Kerry says the physical demands of his job help to keep him fit. 💪 'I get tired at the end of the day, but I get paid to exercise, which is a good thing. We rotate through different roles each week, which keeps things interesting,' he said. Originally from Papua New Guinea, Kerry’s journey with Queensland Health began in 1998 at the temporary Greenslopes laundry facility before moving to the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital (RBWH). 'Working at RBWH was the best. Meeting patients made me grateful because you see people struggling, and I consider myself lucky to be agile and healthy.' When not at work, Kerry stays busy playing with his band and spending quality time with his family! 🎶 'I still play bass in a rock 'n' roll band for the oldies. My wife and I have five children and many happy, healthy grandchildren who keep us on our toes.' Queensland Health has laundries in Maryborough and at The Prince Charles Hospital and Princess Alexandra Hospital campuses, which provide linen services to health facilities from Bundaberg to the southern Queensland border. Thank you, Kerry! Your hard work and dedication help deliver this vital service for patients across South East Queensland. ❤️ Inspired by Kerry's story? Join our team and help make a difference. • I’m passionate about making the impossible, possible—that’s what we do in Supply Chain.’ Meet Raquel, a leader in healthcare logistics who has spent over two decades making sure Queensland’s hospitals, health services and ambulance teams have the supplies they need, when they need them most. 🙌 Her journey started in operating theatres at just 20 years old. From there, she moved into procurement, contract management and leadership, shaping the future of supply chain operations in both private and public healthcare. Now, as Senior Director of Warehousing and Logistics, Raquel leads teams across Cairns, Townsville, Rockhampton and Brisbane, overseeing the distribution of critical medical supplies, PPE and equipment. 🏥 ‘Supply Chain might not be on the frontline, but the work we do is essential to patient care. One day, an ET tube [a flexible plastic tube inserted into the trachea (windpipe) to help with breathing] is in our warehouse. The next, it’s on a Life Flight saving someone’s life. That’s the impact of what we do,’ she said. Throughout her career, there have been many proud moments, but nothing stands out more than how her team stepped up during the pandemic. ‘We worked together to make sure Queenslanders had the best care possible. I’m proud to have been part of that,’ she said. Outside of work, Raquel is a proud mum of three. Whether she’s cheering on her kids at futsal and netball or supporting them at the racetrack, family is at the heart of everything she does. Thank you, Raquel, for your leadership and dedication. The work you and your team do every day supports Queensland's health services to deliver life-saving care. ❤️ #HealthHero
