  • When it comes to romance scams, protect your heart and your wallet. If it feels too good to be true, it probably is. Last year, ACT residents lost more than $850,000 to dating and romance scams, with 69 reports made to Scamwatch. Romance scams are continuing to evolve, with scammers using different channels to target specific age groups. Stay alert and protect yourself and your loved ones online: 💔 Never send money or cryptocurrency to anyone you’ve met online. Be sceptical of any requests for money, no matter how genuine the story may seem. 💔 Verify the person's identity. Take things slow and be wary if their story doesn’t add up or if they refuse to video chat or meet in person. 💔 Conduct reverse image searches on their profile pictures to check it doesn’t belong to someone else at https://bit.ly/3CFC0yD 💔 Beware of overly affectionate behaviour. If someone you’ve just met online starts professing love quickly, it’s a red flag. 💔 Be aware of the amount of personal information you share and avoid sharing compromising material, which scammers can use to blackmail you. If you do fall for a scam, act quickly; contact your bank if they have your banking information and report the scam to Scamwatch. Reporting scams is easy to do and can be done anonymously. • More than 50,000 students returned to, or began at, public schools in Canberra this week, including for the first time, Aunty Agnes Shea High School. New school principal Daniel Mowbray said he was excited to welcome the first cohort of Year 7 students to the brand-new school in Taylor. Daniel collaborated with the staff and students to come up with the school values of kindness, inclusivity, and curiosity. “We want our students to leave this place as great humans; we want them to be kind and inclusive, and we want them to look curiously at the world, to make a positive contribution to their communities and the world around them,” Daniel said. Another important element of this school culture is the connection to First Nations culture and the legacy of late senior Ngunnawal Elder Aunty Agnes Shea. The school motto 'Walking Together, Shaping Tomorrow' was inspired by the legacy of Aunty Agnes and her Welcome to Country which always mentioned leaving footprints on the land. “Our motto is about the importance bringing the people in our community together and leaving a really positive impact on the world. Aunty Agnes’ legacy is all about the importance of inclusion and working to create a strong community,” Daniel said.
