Brain Injury Awareness Week (19-25 August) acknowledges the 1 in 40 Australians living with an acquired brain injury and the services that support them. This includes services like the Brain Injury Rehabilitation Unit (BIRU), at the Repat who are helping brain injury patients like Ben (pictured with his BIRU therapists) return home and resume regular activities like driving or washing dishes. "...the hardest part of climbing a ladder is taking the first step...The people in BIRU helped me take that first step and made the journey ahead achievable...” says Ben. #BrainInjuryAwareness #BrainInjuryAwarenessWeek

There's an old saying in medicine "common things happen commonly" -- but clinicians still need to be alert to more unusual health conditions. That's why patient case studies are so important. A case study is a write-up of the presentation and clinical management of a specific patient, with all personal details removed and consent provided. “Doctors share case studies to spread knowledge about unique or rare clinical scenarios they encounter,” said Dr Brandon Stretton, Basic Physician Trainee at Central Adelaide. “By publishing these cases, they help other healthcare professionals learn from their experiences, which can be incredibly useful in diagnosing and treating future patients.” Dr Stretton and Central Adelaide ophthalmologist Dr Sumu Simon recently published a case study about a man who presented to the emergency department reporting sudden onset vision loss in his right eye lasting several hours. The case is also presented in a recent episode of The Royal Australasian College of Physicians podcast, which was prepared in collaboration with clinicians from Northern Adelaide Local Health Network. This week CALHN brought together some of the state's biggest "Pain Changers" for National Pain Week. This year's theme is inspired by the term "game changer", which is often used by people who find new tools and services to manage their chronic pain. Our team of professors and doctors explored the potential of using AI to help to identify chronic pain patients and as a result, reduce ramping and increase patient satisfaction. #NationalPainWeek #Painchangers #ChronicPain

Are you worried about frailty in your parents or grandparents? Or perhaps in yourself? The word AVOID helps you remember key steps you can take to minimise frailty. A is for activity (try and move as much as you can) V is for vaccination (keep up to date with recommended vaccines) O is for optimising medication (make sure you speak with a doctor about your medicines) I is for interaction (lock in times to catch up with other people) D is for diet (choose foods that are nutritious and support your muscles).
