Today we celebrate 6 years of the National Office for Child Safety! We were established on 1 July 2018 in response to the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse and lead the development and implementation of national measures to prevent and respond to child sexual abuse, and support victims and survivors. Over the past 6 years we have: * launched the National Strategy to Prevent and Respond to Child Sexual Abuse 2021-2030 and its Monitoring and Evaluation Framework, and released our First Annual Report * encouraged implementation of the National Principles for Child Safe Organisations, and supported organisations to understand risk and enhance approaches to child safety * launched ‘One Talk at a Time’, Australia’s first national awareness raising and behavioural change campaign on child sexual abuse * continued to engage with our priority groups, people with lived experience, advocates and experts, including by establishing the National Strategy Advisory Group and National Clinical Reference Group, and hosting the National Child Safety Youth Summit * supported victims and survivors to understand how to engage with media and encouraged responsible media reporting on child sexual abuse * worked to enhance national approaches to understanding, preventing and responding to harmful sexual behaviours displayed by children and young people * developed standards and guidance to promote safe, trauma-informed and effective support services for victims and survivors * worked to improve the evidence base by developing a Child Safety Research Agenda * worked to establish a national point of referral for victims and survivors, a national support service for non-offending family members of child sexual abuse perpetrators, and Australia’s first national child sexual abuse offending prevention service. It’s our privilege to work alongside people with lived experience, other experts, advocates, non-government organisations, other government agencies and law enforcement to deliver these projects. We are grateful for the efforts, advice, expertise and contributions of our stakeholders and supporters to protect children and young people. Child sexual abuse is preventable, and we all have a role to play. Visit ChildSafety.gov.au for more information about our work.

It was a privilege to engage with dedicated young people with lived experience and advocates working to keep children and young people safe from sexual abuse over the 2 days of the #NationalChildSafetyYouthSummit.   Day 2 saw some great discussions on early intervention and prevention, trauma-informed approaches to making and receiving disclosures, and addressing gaps in information and resources for children and young people.   Thank you to our inspiring panel who spoke about supporting advocates to elevate their voices and make change. We were also joined by Attorney-General, Mark Dreyfus KC MP and Minister for Youth, Dr. Anne Aly MP who spoke about the Government’s commitment to child safety and the importance of hearing from children and young people.   Visit ChildSafety.gov.au for more information about our work.

The first day of the National Child Safety Youth Summit saw over 50 youth advocates and people with lived experience come together to share their expertise and views on child sexual abuse directly with Government.   It was great to hear from attendees about their key priorities for the Second Action Plan of the National Strategy to Prevent and Respond to Child Sexual Abuse 2021-2030, and how Government can effectively engage with young people.   Thank you to National Children’s Commissioner Anne Hollonds and advocate Grace Tame, CEO of The Grace Tame Foundation, for your thought-provoking keynotes.   Visit ChildSafety.gov.au for more information about our work.   #NationalChildSafetyYouthSummit

National Centre CEO Dr Leanne Beagley PhD, alongside other members of the National Advisory Group for the National Strategy to Prevent and Respond to Child Sexual Abuse, met earlier this week. Facilitated by the National Office For Child Safety team (childsafety.gov.au), these regular conversations bring together a range of amazing leaders, who during this session, had the opportunity to influence the second National Action Plan and talk about civil justice issues for children and adult survivors of child sexual abuse amongst other key issues. Dr Leanne Beagley and the National Centre’s Director of Knowledge Generation, Research and Evaluation, Prof Andrea de Silva also presented an update on the work of the National Centre and a presentation on “The Australian Child Sexual Abuse Attitudes, Knowledge and Response Study”. We are proud to be releasing this ground-breaking study soon, stay tuned. #hereforchange #research #childprotection

We engaged the National Association of Services Against Sexual Violence (NASASV) in partnership with the UNSW Gendered Violence Research Network (GVRN), to develop a practice guide for workers and organisations when engaging with victims and survivors of child sexual abuse. The guide provides evidence-based information and comprehensive resources to help shape how workers and organisations respond to children, young people and adults who are victims and survivors of child sexual abuse. The guide is intended to promote and support accessible, high-quality, trauma-informed services that support all victims and survivors of child sexual abuse of all ages and as their needs change over time. Find out more and access the guide on our website: https://lnkd.in/dkbtBHp2

It’s important for adults to understand what child sexual abuse is, how it occurs, and how to create safer environments for children and young people. Commander Helen Schneider from the Australian Centre to Counter Child Exploitation (ACCCE) explains how adults can safely search for information about how to prevent child sexual abuse. You can visit trusted websites such as the ACCCE and eSafety Commissioner, or learn more about child sexual abuse by visiting https://lnkd.in/gSTY-Ync.
