🌍 CEIG supports proposed improvements in the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO)'s gas projections within the ISP, ensuring improved analysis and clarity for Australia’s clean energy transition 🌍. Key takeaways from our recent submission to the Australian Energy Market Commission (AEMC): ▶ Clarity in Gas Projections We support requirements for AEMO to clarify inputs, assumptions, and scenarios and align gas data with the National Gas Rules, promoting consistency between the Gas Statement of Opportunities (GSOO) and ISP. ▶ Reevaluate Gas Capacity Needs CEIG urges AEMO to reassess the need for new gas plant capacity in the 2024 ISP, given the potential overestimation, while advocating for an emphasis on utility-scale storage and other solutions as primary options. ▶ Community Sentiment We support the decision not to exclude amendments for better integrating community sentiment into the ISP, but stress that these considerations should not be overlooked in the ISP development process. ▶ Weather Data Modelling CEIG emphasises the need for improved weather data modeling to enhance renewable generation forecasting and deep storage planning. 🌏 Powerful insights from The Hon. Matt Kean at today’s Investor Group on Climate Change (IGCC)'s Summit Matt Kean's keynote highlighted the urgency and opportunity for Australia to lead in the green energy transition. His main takeaways were: 🔸 Investors are voting with their capital on where the transition is heading, as we've seen in the International Energy Agency (IEA) stats around clean energy vs. fossil investment; 🔸 Our job in Australia is to harness the capital into the green energy transition; 🔸 Climate change waits for no one; 🔸 With our access to capital, renewable resources and technology, we should seize the moment; 🔸 The faster we can get renewable energy into the grid, the faster we can capture other opportunities to decarbonise the economy (electrify transport and industry); 🔸 Investors need certainty and clarity when making investment decisions, particularly when it comes to planning frameworks, and Australian States need to ensure they deliver fit-for-purpose regulatory environments. 🔸 Delay will bring a bill that we can't afford to pay, as demonstrated in his time as NSW Treasurer by the huge costs borne from the NSW bushfires. #IGCCSummit24 Richard Merzian, Marilyne Crestias, Daniel Zelcer, Kelly Berghella, Sydney Neijmeijer

Clean Energy Investor Group welcomes AEMO Services' release of the future pipeline of CIS tenders by jurisdiction, as detailed in its Renewable Energy Transformation Agreement. Particularly, the heavy focus on generation and storage in NSW is a welcome move, with the need to ensure that the capacity of ageing coal plants in the State is replaced swiftly. CEIG congratulates all Energy Ministers for their collaborative efforts to progress the decarbonisation of Australia’s electricity sector at pace. At the Investor Group on Climate Change (IGCC) Summit in Melbourne, I’m feeling fortunate to be here in solidarity with investors challenging climate change. Leaving on the first flight at dawn this morning from Canberra, the plane was soon consumed by heavy clouds. The sun disappeared and you could see little in the sombre grey. It seemed apt after the last 24 hours. Keynote speaker Stan Grant at the Summit, the self-identified ‘recovering journalist’ explains that we are all Americans. The US is a nation built on an idea that has shaped who we are. That is why we are all feeling it. The division, the loss of intimacy, the icy pandemonium. And it is tempting to rush into how it won’t be that bad. How many of the US policies, tax credits and treaty commitments will take time to wind back. How more coal power stations closed under President Trump than under President Obama’s last term. How it is not 2016. All true. Treasurer Jim Chalmers spoke next about his commitment to a new front door for major investments in net zero. The Australian Government is staying the course. The plane will continue on its path. But right now, we are still in the clouds, and its sombre and grey.

⏰ What consequences could the US election result have for climate leadership? Clean Energy Investor Group's, CEO Richard Merzian spoke to the ABC's Tom Lowrey about the possible implications for global climate action under a Trump vs Harris administration ⤵ https://lnkd.in/g4qg-5F8
We are all watching with bated breath as the votes tally in the US 😟 What happens in the US matters for global climate action and the shared COP28 UAE goal of tripling renewable energy by 2030. There are two clear paths. One is a withdrawal from the Paris Agreement, a winding back of domestic US support for clean energy and rallying behind fossil fuels. In the wake, businesses, States and Cities will try and fill the gap in the We Are Still In coalition. The other stays the path of unleashing the largest public support program for clean energy and manufacturing, taking place now in the US, and solidarity with global action as countries develop their next round of national targets (being discussed next week at COP29 Azerbaijan) My comments to ABC News on climate leadership and the US 👇 https://lnkd.in/gEvqfy6E

Thank you Australian Energy Market Commission (AEMC) for hosting a robust and in-depth economic conversation on the future market design for a high renewables grid. This is an incredibly important piece of thinking that must work in and for the electricity grid of tomorrow. I am doing some work at Clean Energy Investor Group with Castalia to deepen the thinking on some of those questions – including what that high VRE grid look like, what price and investment incentives it will require, and what are the real-world commercial features that will come with it - and we look forward to sharing our thoughts on this shortly. Planning for a post-coal, 100%+ variable renewable energy grid must begin now. On 31 October 2024, CEIG, on behalf of its members, participated in the Senate Select Committee on Energy Planning and Regulation's public hearing. CEIG welcomes the inquiry, it provides an opportunity to assess whether existing institutional and regulatory structures are fit for purpose. We presented 3 key recommendations: 💡 Establish an Innovator and Investor Panel, similar to ECA, to provide AEMO with formal guidance on legislation and regulation. 💡 Support the Integrated System Plan (ISP) with stronger regulatory and policy frameworks to ensure the timely delivery of critical infrastructure, with Energy Ministers ultimately accountable for its timely implementation. 💡 Task market bodies with a forward-looking mandate that aligns with long-term investment signals and updated National Electricity Objective (NEO) emissions reduction goals, with regular reviews to keep their Terms of Reference fit-for-purpose in a high-VRE grid. 💻 Read our full submission to the Inquiry here: https://lnkd.in/gJihSkZF ************ 🍃 Clean Energy Investor Group is proud to be the voice of Australian capital, advocating for policy that supports clean energy investment, and our nation's commitment to its climate targets 🍃

Community independent candidate for Bradfield. Finance executive, clean energy expert & local mother of two.
Too true Richard Merzian and progress is sound thanks largely to householders installing rooftop solar. But it could be better without the headwinds of state government approval processes, and certain special interests playing careless politics with our energy economy. When the ALP formed government in 2022, the share of Australia’s electricity generation from renewable sources was just over 30%. It grew to 35% in 2023 and as of this month, it's 39.4%. In terms of peak supply, October also saw a new instantaneous high of 74.1% share. Imagine where we would could be if we had multi-partisan support for renewables and clean storage. Imagine how much cheaper the capital would be without all this policy risk. Imagine how much more affordable electricity would be for consumers too.
Australia has everything it needs to pioneer the first major grid running almost entirely on renewables and clean storage. That doesn't include nuclear as Clean Energy Investor Group member Squadron Energy and NSW Minister Penny Sharpe point out. Lets focus on what works, what is here now, what is sustainable and what can generate the cheapest electricity. I'll be in Melbourne this week for #AllEnergyAU and keen to connect with any members and friends - reach out if you are around.
