We are laying the groundwork for something big! Work has been ramping up on-site, and our contractor Consolidated Power Projects is busy installing the foundations of ZEN's Templers Battery project. Maxwell Weppner, ZEN Senior Electrical Engineer - now showcasing his multi-skilled talent, excelling as both an engineer and a photographer - explained why these images represent a significant step in the project's development. "The preparation of these foundations is a testament to the impressive skills of the project's team. The precision and accuracy required, down to the millimetre, for supporting the 132/33kV 152-tonne Transformer, is truly remarkable.", he said. Multiple other workstreams are commencing on the site, including trenching and conduit installation. The 132kV Cable will connect Templers BESS to the grid, providing reliable and clean energy to South Australia. Thank you for sharing the goods with us, Max. Is an effective, sustainable global energy transition possible, and quickly? Partnerships are the key, ZEN Director Paula Conboy told delegates and media at Singapore International Energy Week (SIEW) Singapore International Energy Week (SIEW) 2024. Paula was a VIP guest and speaker at this year’s SIEW, held in October, alongside our Federal Energy Minister Chris Bowen, as well as delegates from the Australian Energy Regulator and the International Energy Agency (IEA) “Moving at a fast pace requires new solutions, innovation and imagination – all of which is more possible through partnerships. ZEN Energy’s strategy is taking this new approach because thinking the old way – in isolation, as a single player - no longer works. When you consider the pace at which our climate is changing, there is not have enough time available to act alone,” Paula communicated #SIEW2024. Watch video here: https://lnkd.in/gfAT6z_7

Nattai, in south west Sydney, and Burragorang Valley, have been coal mining country since the early 1900s, with the last mine closing in 2001. The Western Sydney Pumped Hydro marks a new chapter, building on the know-how of the past to create the region's prosperity of the future. ZEN's Finlay Adamson and Tony McFadden CEO of our project partner the SADA Dunbier Group, have given evidence at the final hearing of a NSW Parliamentary Inquiry into post-mining land use. They presented the 1GW WSPH project as a case study of how to re-purpose former industrial land, minimising environmental and cultural heritage impacts, for the benefit of the local community, Traditional Owners and Greater Western Sydney. We are still reflecting on the amazing takeaways from The Women in Energy forum. Hosted by ZEN Energy and ElectraNet Pty Ltd, the event was filled with engaging discussions and valuable connections, leaving us with a wealth of insights—too important to keep to ourselves. We are excited to share some key reflections that can inspire further dialogue and innovation: - Phillipa Ou Chen, ZEN's CFO, shared "how exciting it is to see business being done differently at ZEN". She added, "It is not an easy task to be at the front line of helping customers to face price vulnerability in the best way, but we are a disruptive company in the industry." - ElectraNet's Chair Julie Beeby made a great point about "adding diversity to the leadership of companies, going beyond women's leadership." - Nicola McFarlane, COO at the Office of Hydrogen Power South Australia, dove deep into Hydrogen's key role in the state. "SA is at the forefront of using hydrogen in decarbonisation, providing firming service and reliability." - South Australian Chamber of Mines & Energy (SACOME)'s CEO Rebecca Knol mentioned how the state's blackout in 2016 was a wake-up call and "how incredibly lucky we are in Australia with abundant resources for a successful transition". We look forward to building on these insights and driving continued progress together. ZEN is out and about. As the year draws to a close, we reflect on our progress and remain committed to achieving even greater milestones in securing Australia's future as a Superpower. Here are this month’s highlights: - Victoria: ZEN Chief Information Officer Christopher Smyth and industry leaders joined the Women in Energy roundtable, sharing their perspectives on overcoming biases in the industry and supporting initiatives such as the global Equal by 30 campaign. Led by the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water, the campaign is supported by public and private sector organisations - including ZEN - to drive equal pay, leadership, and opportunities for women in the clean energy sector by 2030. - New South Wales: ZEN and our partner, SADA Dunbier Group, were the key sponsors of The Illuminate Wollondilly 2024. The festival provided a great platform to share more information about the proposed 1GW Western Sydney Pumped Hydro Project on the old Wollondilly Coal Washery site at Nattai. - South Australia: The Women in Energy forum was a resounding success! Hosted by ElectraNet Pty Ltd and ZEN Energy's Women's Network ElectraNet Empower and ZEN-A and led by Professor Ross Garnaut, it was a powerful testament to the industry's strong leadership and the opportunities available in the state for a successful transition. Rest assured, we continue to operate at full speed. Watch this space for more achievements coming soon! #ZENEnergy #WeAreZEN #SuperpowerFuture #MoreToCome

Could Australia become a full-employment renewable energy Superpower? Professor Ross Garnaut tackled this and more at the launch event of his fresh-off-the-press book, "Let's Tax Carbon: And Other Ideas for a Better Australia". Our team had the privilege of engaging in a thought-provoking conversation with Ross, where he explored Australia’s unique opportunities to lead the transition to a low-carbon economy. Thank you, The Superpower Institute and University of Melbourne, for this inspiring session! #Superpower #NetZero #TaxCarbon #EnergyTransition

The Western Sydney Pumped Hydro project was showcased at NSW Parliament this week as a case study of how to create a clean energy future from our coal mining past. ZEN's project manager Finlay Adamson and Tony McFadden, CEO of the SADA Dunbier Group - our project partner - gave evidence at a NSW Parliamentary Inquiry examining beneficial uses of former coal mining industry land. ZEN seeks to develop projects on sites already cleared and previously used for industry, such as mining and agriculture, minimising environmental impacts and creating second chances for brownfield sites. The WSPH project site at Nattai in southwest Sydney was used for decades as a coal washery, servicing mines below the site in Burragorang Valley. It has been undergoing rehabilitation since 2019. Labor, Liberal, National, and Greens MPs heard how the degraded land has a bright future as a large-scale renewable energy project that will benefit the state’s economy by strengthening the electricity system, enabling the timely closure of NSW coal-fired power stations, contributing to growth in Western Sydney, and helping reduce consumer energy prices.
