Designing steel structures just got easier. Timothy Mayes, a structural engineering tech from New South Wales, used ClearCalcs to design steel frames for a car showroom. Here's why ClearCalcs made the difference: - Ready-to-use calculator library: Tim could quickly analyze steel members based on client needs using ClearCalcs steel beam and column calculators. - Meets Australian standards: Ensures the design complies with the latest steel structure requirements of AS 4100:2020 standards. - Quick adjustments: If required, Tim can make changes easily to his calculations without starting from scratch. The problem many engineers face is balancing speed with compliance. Tim's experience shows that with the right tools, you can achieve both. Want to streamline your structural design process? "Why I love using ClearCalcs for 90% of my projects." Matthew Ward from Ward Engineering shared his experience with ClearCalcs. He uses it daily for beams, columns, footings, and shear walls. Here's why it's a game-changer: 1. User-friendly interface: "It's the most user-friendly engineering software I've ever used." This makes it easy to integrate into daily workflows. 2. Load linking capability: "This feature is a lifesaver. You can analyze a beam, take the reactions, and apply them directly to the column and footing." No more manual calculations and updates. 3. Efficiency: "Previously, updating a beam meant redoing all calculations for columns and footings. Now, any change updates everything automatically." This saves so much time and reduces errors. Matt highlights the value ClearCalcs brings to structural engineers. It's not just about the tools but how they simplify complex tasks, making your work more efficient and accurate. If you haven't tried ClearCalcs yet, you're missing out on a powerful tool that can transform your engineering projects. Ever struggled with non-standard beam sizes? We've added the ability to create custom steel sections in our Australian and Canadian databases. This means you can now select custom geometry and materials and connect to the steel design calculator. Here's why this matters: - Perfect for projects needing non-standard beam sizes or welded sections. - Ideal for engineers working on pre-engineered metal buildings or bridges. - Seamlessly integrates with Steel Design Calculators for CSA S16:19 and AS 4100:2020 standards. This tool is designed to make your work easier and more efficient, especially for those complex projects where standard solutions just don't cut it. P.S. Want to see how it works? We reviewed different factors and considerations when selecting the right column shapes and materials for your next design project. 🏛️ Consider the importance of aesthetics. Circular columns are commonly used for modern and elegant design, while square columns tend to be the choice for more traditional or contemporary buildings. 🖇️ Type of connections The shape of the columns dictates the types of connections you can use. The flat surface of square, rectangular, or H-shaped columns allows for easy connections with bolted connections through a welded end plate. Meanwhile, circular columns typically utilize welded connections in steel and embedded reinforcement in concrete. ⚖️ Requirement for structural capacity Reinforced concrete exhibits the highest load capacity and is the most costly. Steel is relatively compact and is usually mid-range in price, while timber offers the cheapest option but offers the weakest resistance to bending, shear, and axial forces. In summary: - Circular columns are ideal for superior load-carrying capacity, and they offer aesthetic appeal for modern architectural design - Square columns, especially those using PFCs or universal columns, are well-suited for light commercial or industrial structures where high bending loads are anticipated - Rectangular and H-shaped columns are versatile options and offer flexibility in design and performance, making them adaptable to different project requirements. Let's get nostalgic; what do you remember about your life before and after computers? Ati Aziz here, jumping from the ClearCalcs team: "Before computers, I remember going to my dad's office (he was a principal at a mechanical and electrical engineering firm) and seeing men and women working on large drafting tables with moving rulers on them. I thought this was the coolest thing. After computers, seeing my nieces grow up swiping their fingers across phones and tablets from a young age, doing things I can't even imagine you could (one of them is now studying to become an engineer!)."
