There’s nothing scarier than when a child can’t breathe.Yet, fossil fuels are doing exactly that. Coal, oil and gas are warming our planet, polluting our air and making our kids sick. With air pollution endangering kids at thousands of schools and childcare centres located close to busy roads, we need to clean up our air and our roads to keep kids safe. “I did feel sick to my stomach when I saw Donald Trump elected. But my second thought was: Trump can’t stop action on climate.” Climate Council CEO Amanda McKenzie speaks to Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) News on what a second Trump presidency could mean for the climate, and why the momentum towards our clean energy future is an unstoppable megatrend.
-
A second Trump presidency can’t stop climate action. "The energy transition is now well underway. Nearly US$2tn a year is now invested in clean energy projects, almost double that spent on new oil, gas and coal supply. None of this stops the day Trump re-enters the White House." We've been here before and we got through it, and we'll do it again.

Our clean energy progress will not be trumped. Donald Trump's re-election as US President is a blow felt by millions of Australians. But here's the thing: We've had setbacks before, and come back stronger. In fact, Climate Council was created because of a huge setback. When Tony Abbott was elected 11 years ago, his government immediately shut down the Climate Commission. Five days later, we were launched as Australia's voice of climate science and climate solutions. Now, Australia has binding emissions targets and around 40% of the electricity in our main grid comes from clean energy. We will bounce back from this setback, because we always do. A lot of people are hurting today, and that's fair enough. But if, like us, you want to channel your frustration and disappointment into resolute action, come along to our "Lies, Damn Lies and Elections" webinar as we discuss what the US election and climate misinformation means for Australia: https://lnkd.in/gpquP_2V

As the world braces for US election results, it's important to remember one thing. No matter who wins, climate progress will continue. "The global energy transition is well underway and accelerating ... the direction of travel is clear and a Trump presidency won't change that global megatrend," said Climate Council fellow Dr Wesley Morgan. We must keep building on the progress we've already made, in Australia and worldwide.

A heatwave is due to strike Australia’s east coast later this week, with temperatures expected above 40C. It is predicted to make the country's north “one of the hottest places in the world” the Bureau of Meteorology has forecast. BoM is warning "severe heatwaves can be dangerous for older people, babies, children, pregnant and breastfeeding women, people with medical conditions and people who are unwell."

🔁 repost from Australian surfer and activist Belinda Baggs 🔁 Ive been asked by many friends about the best way we can all make a positive difference to cutting our emissions. Over the next few weeks I’ll be sharing 5 of the top things we can consider changing. This week let’s talk about seizing the power of the sun with solar. “We know that children are most at risk from air pollution.” Climate Councillor @Kate Charlesworth joins @9news to discuss our latest report, ‘Airborne Hazard’, which finds more than one in five Perth schools and daycare centres are within 100 metres of a major road - exposing kids to dangerous emissions from cars and trucks. The solution? Our governments must do everything they can to cut harmful climate pollution. #ClimatePollution #Kids #KidsHealth
