  • An excellent article summarising evidence given yet again, to a Federal government inquiry. We were also there and raised the issues of courts dismissing the impacts of family violence against children and, on incomplete evidence, ordering children named on family violence orders, to live with the parent who is the named perpetrator on the orders. https://lnkd.in/gezAnEeP

  • Right now – until 12pm Thursday 22 August – EthicalJobs.com.au is matching your donations to CSMC. That means there's just three days left to double your impact! When single mother families in crisis need support, they contact CSMC. Our support workers assist single mother families with expert support, advice, and information, when they need it the most. With the cost-of-living hitting even average families, the children in low income families are really missing out. Single mothers are doing all they can to protect their children, but the kids still feel the hunger and the cold – and the responsibility to try and hid expenses from their mum. CSMC provides expert specialist support, with the unique addition of having lived experience of being single mothers. They are trusted; they are experts; they are a safe place for single mothers to turn. Funds are urgently needed for emergency relief to assist single mothers to feed their children and maintain their housing. So please, if you are considering donating to a charity that supports families in need, now is the time to do it. https://lnkd.in/gYqi4RXu

  • This is Jacqui; she has been at the heart of CSMC’s Support Line for 14 years and is now Support Services Coordinator. Jacqui and her team provide single mothers with the specialist support and information that that CSMC is known for. Now Jacqui is speaking out and asking for your help. Our Support Line Workers say they have never had as much unmet demand as now, and the need has never been more acute. The need for support and information has always been high, but demand has skyrocketed due to the cost-of-living crisis. Single mothers who call our Support Line need our help now, but the sheer volume of calls means that many are having to leave messages and wait for a callback. We urgently need to employ an additional part-time Support Worker to make sure single mother families in dire circumstances get the help they need: https://lnkd.in/gXeXGFtM #singlemothers #singlemothersaustralia #singlemothersupport #singlemums #CSMC #councilofsinglemothersandtheirchildren

Tonight, as part of the Safe Steps Family Violence Candlelight Vigil we light a candle for EVERY Aboriginal woman who has died or been brutally disappeared due to family violence. But the light and warmth of one candle is NOT ENOUGH to ease our fear or overcome the deep sadness and loss we feel every time a woman’s life is taken. So tonight we light not one candle but MANY.  For every woman, for every Aboriginal woman, whose life has been violently taken. For the children who will never again be embraced by their Mum’s love. For every family who has lost a Mother, Sister, Daughter, Aunty, or Grandmother. As we light these candles, Djirra sends strength and profound respect to all women. And we want you to know that you can count on us. We will NEVER GIVE UP on our fight for women to live a life free from violence.    #LightACandle2024 #Vigil2024 #WeRememberYou #NeverForgotten Antoinette Braybrook AM

  • This is an excellent article and the video included at the end of it, spells out difficulties for single mother families. A particular change we need is the uncoupling of late child support payments and family tax benefits as the former creates a debt in the latter to the receiving parent.

  • Write a tribute on CSMC's Single Mother Wall of Honour! Thursday March 21 is International Single Parents Day, and to celebrate, we’re creating out own Wall of Honour to pay tribute to all the amazing single mothers in our lives - and you have the chance to contribute. Our single mother community is made up of countless remarkable women who perform vital work supporting their families, often under challenging conditions. And they do it every day. They don't do it for thanks; they don't do it for recognition. But we're going to give it to them anyway. This is your chance to say thanks to a single mother, to recognise their achievements, or to simply tell them, "we see you". Simply fill out the form, telling us why the single mum you’re nominating deserves to be on our Wall of Honour. It might be something incredible she does; it could simply be that she gets up and gets the job done every day. Tell us about her and what makes her so awesome! Every single mother nominated will be emailed a certificate to print and keep, and all throughout the week of International Single Parents Day, we’ll be adding to the Wall of Honour. https://lnkd.in/gnuVmS6S

  • Help us finish the job and raising the eligibility of the Parenting Payment Single to those with a youngest child of 16 years. We are delighted that the Federal government decided in May 2023 to extend access to the Parenting Payment Single until the youngest child turns 14. Originally set at 16 years, it was reduced to 8 years in a combination of Howard and Gillard government moves in 2006 and 2013. Good as it is, it still leaves 16,910 single parents with a youngest child aged 14-16 years, struggling to live on the lower JobSeeker payment, an average of $170 less income per fortnight. Teenagers are growing fast, eat more than younger children and most need parental engagement and supervision as they navigate social and peer challenges. They are also preparing for some of their most critical schooling years. This is no time to cut the family budget, put pressure on sole parents to get or increase paid employment, and leave our children floundering. Research shows 60% of single mother families were formed through escaping family violence. Children of all ages have, and too often, can still be harmed. Reducing the level of income support lowers mothers' ability to protect their children and support their family's recovery. Please join us in encouraging government to finish this job, to acknowledge that parenting is work, and single parenting is twice the work. We would like you to share this post with others in your network so single parents in a variety of situations may see it and write direct to responsible Ministers in preparation for the May budget.
