March has been a HUGE month for recognising the legacies incredible women have left and ensuring they remain visible. Last night, Maribyrnong City Council added another key milestone by approving proposals to commemorate their three-time Mayor Cr Sarah Carter who tragically passed away last year. Sarah's legacies speak for themselves, but specific actions that the Council will introduce include: 🔸an award category in the annual Civic Awards to celebrate local women for their achievements in contributing to a fairer, more equitable community 🔸displaying Cr Carter's Mayoral robe within the Council Chamber 🔸collaborating with the Blacksmiths Festival Association to install a contemplative seat on the Footscray Wharf 🔸 requesting a further report for additional naming proposals Sarah was also one of Gender Equity Victoria (GEN VIC) Board Directors so we are thrilled that the Council will build on our #puthernameonit work to ensure women like Sarah are remembered and their memories live on in our public spaces. #genderequity #genderequality #makehervisible #commemorativejustice #localgovernment

Less than two per cent of statues across Victoria are of women – and many of these are women with their husbands, partners or other men. There are more statues of animals than of women in Victoria. But Victoria is changing this. Advocates, artists and agitators will be celebrated in six new public artworks across the state as part of the Victorian Women’s Public Art Program. Minister for Women Natalie Hutchins MP today celebrated International Women’s Day by announcing the six new projects, thanking more than 10,000 Victorians who voted on which trailblazing women they’d like to see immortalised through public art. The 2025 Victorian Women’s Public Art Program will recognise six inspirational stories: 🔸 Aunty Margaret (Lilardia) Tucker MBE 🔸 Montsalvat Artist Community 🔸 Louisa Briggs 🔸Barbara Rae 🔸Aunty Dorothy Peters AM 🔸Wonthaggi Miners’ Women’s Auxiliary Recognising women’s achievements and contributions in public spaces is an important part of our work towards a more equal Victoria. Today, 8 March is International Women's Day. A day devoted to celebrating the achievements of women and seeking gender equality. This year's official theme is ‘March Forward’, commemorating 30 years since the United Nation’s Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action for achieving gender equality. Over the years, women have broken barriers, reshaped policies, and ignited powerful movements worldwide. But despite these advances, millions of women and girls still face systemic inequalities, rising violence, and economic disparities that hold them back from reaching their full potential. Want to be a part of REAL change so we can march forward?
