Exciting to be in Karratha today for the Developing Northern Australia Conference. This afternoon we have heard again from leading institutions providing the foundations for northern Australia’s futures, including Cooperative Research Centre for Developing Northern Australia (CRCNA), Northern Australia Infrastructure Facility (NAIF), RDA Northern Alliance and The Chamber of Minerals and Energy of Western Australia. Central to these messages was the value of northern Australia to our nation and the need for collaboration across industries and communities united by place. First Nations leadership through Peter Yu, Colin Saltmere, Michael Woodley and Vonda Malone was clear and powerful, with economic strategy and truth telling central to the stories presented. Political support for the north was strong with Madeleine King and Susan McDonald, as well as special envoy Luke Gosling MP noting commitments and recognition of our unique north. Delighted to be referred to in Minister Kings interview, highlighting the opportunity to think differently as we further develop our resources sector to supply minerals critical to our global economy. https://lnkd.in/gNM7qV5R

The Natural Capital Accounting project included a first attempt at testing: 💡 the NCA forecasting process; and 💡 the applicability of NCA as a planning tool for mining. Findings included that forecasting requires: 🍃 an in-depth understanding of the ecological context. 🍂 development of a mine plan that includes set forecasting time periods and a clear definition of activities to be undertaken during this. Importantly, it also found that historical ecological and other data can be used to forecast future condition performance and develop forecasted condition accounts. #TransformationInMiningCommunities CRC TiME Annual Forum Recap: Enabling Change Together! 🌞 Two amazing days of insights, innovation and collaboration, gathering mine closure and transition experts, academia, industry and community. All united in the shared goal of driving change across several themes and thoughtful discussions on key issues such as operationalizing ESG, regions in transition, enabling Indigenous opportunities, net zero and mine closure solutions, regulatory excellence for transition and education. Some key takeaways: 🔹Closure as a core business is essential, where closure objectives will drive the outcomes 🔹Enabling and developing indigenous leaders is crucial for sustainable closure 🔹Collaborative research can bring stakeholders and mining companies together to address closure challenges 🔹Avoiding overpromises and underdelivery is crucial for successful closure. 🔹Enhancing the maturity of the closure knowledge base is key to achieving closure readiness 🔹A workforce strategy that educates the younger generation on closure roles is vital for future success 🔹Integrated strategies are needed for mine closure, focusing on the big picture before the details 🔹Good engineering and thorough characterization are fundamental to preventing AMD generation 🔹Data and knowledge sharing are essential for collaborative planning and regional assessments   This year the forum reinforced the power of collective effort in enabling change and driving benefit-oriented transitions in mine closure. A huge thank you to Guy Boggs, Tom Measham, and all organizers, speakers, and participants for making this event so impactful. And a special shoutout to Reannon Portas for her stylish outfit that allowed us to win an amazing book in the giveaway. I’m eager to dive into the fantastic book we received! Looking forward to continuing these vital conversations and driving positive change in our industry together! #EventRecap #IndustryTrends #Innovation #Collaboration #EnablingChangeTogether #TransformationInMiningCommunities

Proud to be a part of this 👇

In case you missed it... A report we launched this week showcases the important role that Cooperative Research Centres (CRCs) are playing in helping Australia reach Net Zero by 2050. Analysing the contribution of a group of 13 CRCs, ACIL Allen found that Australia's CRC Program is making a significant contribution through research and innovation to Australia's decarbonisation targets. The 13 CRCs have collectively spent/plan to spend a total of $2.28 billion toward their priorities. More than 49% of this funding, or $1.12 billion, is allocated to decarbonisation-related activities. The report demonstrates the importance of bringing together government, industry and research to solve one of the most pressing problems facing the Australian economy today. It calls for greater collaboration, coordination and investment to maximise the power of the CRC model. What collaboration, leadership and training is needed to ensure successful post-mining futures? Can policy and regulations enhance outcomes for #mining communities in transition? And what lessons can be learned from examples of mine closures in Australia? The CRC TiME Annual Forum was held in Brisbane this week, highlighting the challenges and opportunities underpinning mine closures and the transition to new land uses. Sessions highlighted the need to understand regions in transition, First Nations leadership and opportunities, education and training, and policy excellence for transition. Thank you to CRC TiME for an informative forum on #transformationsinminingeconomies The University of Queensland is proud to co-host the Cooperative Research Centre for Transformations in Mining Economies (CRC TiME), a CRC that brings together over 75 partners from the mining industry, government, regions and communities, First Nations, and researchers to address the challenges and opportunities underpinning mine closure. Great few days over in Meeanjin (Brisbane) for the annual #CRCTiME forum. Inspired and excited about progressing with our steering committee to continue developing a #FirstNations VET pathway to address the current gap in training and education options in post mining transitions and mine closure. A few key learnings I took away: - Communication is key and subtle differences in language can make a world of difference - remember this when engaging with different rights and stake holders! - Positive post mining outcomes won't be achieved without collaboration from a range of research, industry, regulators and, most importantly, community (especially First Nations!). - ESG is important but without financial leverage, complete buy in across all players is not likely - future opportunities depend on this. - There are a lot of passionate and incredibly talented people in this space that are driving better practice in mine transitions and we need to keep encouraging younger generations to engage. - Try to time attending conferences around your birthday and you might score a great book out of it 😂 #mineclosure #postclosurelanduse #102thingstodowithaholeintheground Zane H. Two days later and the beautiful halls of Customs House have been filled with conversations between people passionate about enabling post mine transitions that deliver value. How can you not be inspired? Baringa Barambah Meeanjinu’s amazing Welcome to Country connected us to this place we gathered and the many generations of dialogue held on Country. Followed by Rohitesh’s global contextualisation and great opening words on fundamentals for responsible closure; and keynote addresses by James Purtill and Raina Hattingh each day established the opportunity for shared learning to enable value based transitions that respond to ‘pull’ factors by post mine investors, rights holders and stakeholders and what it means for industry to be closure ready as we learn from the extensive closure transitions underway and imminent in Australia. With over 250 people working on our projects currently underway, it was exciting to see the breadth and progress of work from AMD remediation and testing guidance, to natural capital accounting, learning for enabling policy, pit lake transitions, education and training, First Nations knowledge sharing platforms, leadership journeys, economic transitions, strategy development and operationalising ESG the program covered the rich jig saw pieces that need connect to make transitions work and break the deadlock that has led us to such a limited track record of relinquished assets. A huge thanks to everyone who made this event a success. We finish inspired and with incredibly rich information shared so willingly by our partners to inform the year ahead-awesome knowing that we form part of a rich ecosystem committed to enabling change together!
