  • Although major sporting events like the Melbourne Cup don’t cause domestic and family violence, they can make existing abuse more frequent and severe. Remember, help is available. We encourage members of the community to be vigilant and supportive. If anyone is in immediate danger, always call the police on triple zero (000). 24-hour helplines: Women's Domestic Violence Helpline: 1800 007 339 1800RESPECT: 1800 737 732 MensLine Australia: 1300 78 99 78 Sexual Assault Resource Centre: 1800 199 888 WA Police: in an emergency call 000 CWSW service directory https://lnkd.in/dNak8mb4

  • We were proud and excited to host the launch of our Spotlight into Family and Domestic Violence in Refugee and Migrant Communities in WA today. Refugee and migrant women and children are at an increased risk of family and domestic violence. They also face other barriers to accessing services to support, including language, socio-cultural norms, racism, immigration and welfare policies. While there is still much work to do, the report, which includes 5 recommendations, is an important step in identifying these barriers so we can better support refugee and migrant women and children in our community. Thanks to Lois Dale May for her thoughtful and reflective Welcome to Country and the Hon. Sabine Winton MLA for speaking at the event, along with Tinashe La, Della P., Dr Marilyn Metta, GAICD and Farida Hani and everyone who attended including Meredith Hammat MLA and Bradley Pinch WA Police Force. Thanks also to The Advisory Group for all their work in developing the report and to sponsors Zonta House Refuge Association, Ruah Community Services, CommunicareWomen's Legal Service WA and Ethnic Communities Council of Western Australia. Gisele Pelicot walking into to testify against her abusers in the rape trial that has shaken and inspired the world. “It’s not for us to have shame, it’s for them,” she told the court. "I want all women who have been raped to say: Madame Pelicot did it, I can too. I don't want them to be ashamed any longer.” Gisele deserves the Nobel Prize.

  • Everyone deserves access to safe reproductive healthcare and women deserve to make decisions about their own bodies. We have watched in horror at the erosion of rights overseas. It’s vital this does not become the story in our country.

Over the past month, we've seen ‘debates’ about reproductive rights including abortion back on the agenda in halls of power across the country. Women have protested on the steps of the South Australian parliament, and students walked out of a university this week when faced with a speech railing against abortion and IVF. We’ve made incredible strides over recent decades in this country to ensure women and gender diverse people are afforded the right to make decisions about their own bodies, and access support and healthcare. With this conversation back on the agenda, those rights are under threat. This backlash must be challenged for what it is: dangerous, and contributing to a culture where people are not trusted to make decisions about their bodies, setting the conditions for gender-based violence to be condoned. We’ve seen the rights of women and LGBTIQ+ communities eroded overseas in the past few years, and it’s a stark reminder that rights cannot be set and forget. Protecting rights and access to safe reproductive healthcare is an ongoing effort. We all deserve to be safe, equal and respected.

  • Remember the feeling of freedom the first time you got behind the wheel fully licensed? The ability to go where you want, when you want, on your own, is a universally freeing experience. You might take driving for granted, but for victim-survivors of family, domestic and sexual violence learning to drive marks the beginning of a whole new chapter. Especially in regional WA where having the ability to drive is essential. The relaunched Changing Gears: Women Behind the Wheel Project helps women across Western Australia get their driver's licence and re-build their independence. Services who support victim-survivors can apply via our website https://lnkd.in/eT62fvki

  • What's better than a novelty cheque? The knowledge that we can help more women and children start their lives again after fleeing family and domestic violence. A big thank you to IGA Supermarkets Community Chest Program and Metcash for their generous donation to our Funds for Freedom project. Funds for Freedom helps women and children buy a fridge, a washing machine or a dishwasher so they can set up a new home after fleeing violence.
