Meet Almira, a teacher from Jabiru Area School. Originally from the Philippines, Almira chose to teach in Jabiru for the experience and the opportunity to work in remote communities, contributing to the education of indigenous students. Teaching in the Northern Territory has expanded her knowledge of "cultures, traditions, and histories, which helps my teaching practices and approach in inclusion teaching." One of her most rewarding experiences was the warm acceptance she received in Jabiru. Despite joining the school in the last term, the students and colleagues welcomed her with open arms, treating her as if she had been there from the start. Upon arriving in Jabiru, Almira was in awe of "stunning landscapes, the lush greenery and the proximity of Kakadu National Park." She advises new teachers to consider the Northern Territory for its professional development opportunities and the chance to immerse in culture. Living in Jabiru has allowed Almira to explore nature and wildlife in ways she never imagined, seeing wallabies on the road and witnessing a river full of crocodiles at Cahills Crossing. Reflecting on her journey, Almira says, "stepping into a new environment opens the door to endless possibilities, every experience, no matter how unfamiliar, is an opportunity to grow, discover, and embrace the unexpected." Almira's story highlights the rewarding and transformative experience of teaching in the Top End of the Northern Territory.
