Our Senior Fisheries Biologist Gemma Mackenzie recently delivered information sessions on the draft accepted development requirements (ADR) for operational work regarding the removal, destruction or damage of marine plants. Over 150 attendees came together from local governments, Queensland Government, port corporations, consultants, environmental engineers, regional natural resource management bodies, and blue carbon specialists. Gemma answered questions about work types and requirements proposed in the draft ADR and explained how accepted development provisions work in context with other development assessment and authorisation processes. A blue carbon specialist thanked the team for their "trailblazing work to facilitate restoration work in the coastal zone". There's still time to have your say on the draft major update of the ADR 👉 https://brnw.ch/21wRBoo Submissions close 5pm on Friday 4 April 2025.

It’s great to see the impact the Queensland Biosecurity Grants Program is supporting! The University of Queensland’s recent workshops is a great example of how we're investing in the future of biosecurity through education. By bringing together high school students, UQ is helping to foster an early interest in #biosecurity and its vital role in safeguarding our ecosystem. The hands-on experience in UQ’s top-notch facilities allows these young minds to see firsthand the impacts and importance of robust biosecurity measures. Let's cultivate a generation that is well-equipped to support and enhance Queensland's biosecurity resilience. Well done, Kayvan Etebari for leading this fantastic program at UQ!
Today, we hosted Year 8–10 students from Corinda State High School and Wilsonton State High School for a biosecurity workshop. This initiative, supported by the Department of Primary Industries (Queensland), aims to educate young learners about #biosecurity. Students explored animal and plant biosecurity through hands-on activities and visits to our teaching and research facilities in #Gatton. They learned about best biosecurity practices at our Wildlife Centre and the Queensland Animal Science Precinct. They also had the opportunity to visit our state-of-the-art molecular biology laboratory, where our researchers and PhD students contribute to strengthening biosecurity and agriculture in Queensland. If your school is interested in joining this initiative, please contact our team at agfs.student.experience@uq.edu.au — we’d love to welcome more students to our campus! Spore-tacular news for Australia’s mushroom industry! We recently had the pleasure of welcoming Australian Mushroom Growers' Associations CEO Leah Bramich, world-famous Dr Mush Geoff Martin, and Hort Innovation's Bianca Cairns to our Maroochy Research Facility, to launch an innovative post-harvest research project. 👨🌾 We also visited SjW Mushrooms on the Sunshine Coast, a key collaborator in this work. Along the way, we uncovered some fascinating fungi facts – did you know mushrooms grow 4% per hour? Or that button mushrooms are just young portobellos that need more time to grow and spread? ⏲️ Led by Dr Hung Duong and the Supply Chain Innovation team, this project is focused on improving postharvest handling practices to enhance mushroom quality and extend shelf life for consumers. By refining storage and transport methods, we’re helping deliver fresher, longer-lasting mushrooms to Australian households, which won’t leave mush-room for improvement! #MushroomInnovation #SupplyChainSolutions #HortInnovation #QueenslandAgriculture

How did you spend your Earth Hour at 8:30pm Saturday, 22 March? Millions of people around the world switched off their lights for 60 minutes to symbolise a collective commitment to combating climate change and biodiversity loss. 🌃🌜🌏 Our staff in Toowoomba were invited to go stargazing at the University of Southern Queensland campus with telescopes pointed into the night sky. The Central Regional Office team at Parkhurst proposed a 'building against building' challenge to record activities, including a campfire under the stars, spotlighting with torches, a glow-in-the-dark party, and a candle-lit dinner! Here are some of the winning shots. 🤩 #PassionAndPurpose #EarthHour2025
