Diabetes Australia welcomes the $4.4 million election commitment from the ACT Liberal Party to deliver a type 2 diabetes prevention program similar to initiatives run by Diabetes Australia in Queensland and New South Wales, and a gestational diabetes community education campaign. This commitment is good news for the ACT and we would welcome a matched commitment from the Labor Government. Read more: https://ow.ly/uwqs50TIBLz

Today the ACT Opposition made a $4.4 million election commitment to deliver a type 2 diabetes prevention program and gestational diabetes awareness campaign in the ACT. Diabetes Australia’s Group CEO Justine Cain was in Canberra to welcome the commitment from Opposition Leader Elizabeth Lee and Shadow Health Minister Leanne Castley. It was great to be joined by Joe who lives with type 2 diabetes and spoke about his experience of diagnosis and management. Hearing his story was a powerful confirmation of the real-life impact of health care support for people living with diabetes. Over 16,000 people in the ACT are living with type 2 diabetes and nearly 1000 more are living with gestational diabetes. With Australia in the midst of a diabetes epidemic, prevention programs are more important than ever. Research shows type 2 diabetes can be prevented or delayed in up to 58% of cases if people have access to appropriate healthcare and support. Diabetes Australia delivers successful prevention programs in Queensland and New South Wales so we welcome this commitment to a program in the ACT which can provide basic health coaching and support to those at high risk of type 2 diabetes, as well as a campaign to raise community awareness of gestational diabetes. We’re proud to be celebrating the first year of delivering NSW Health’s Get Healthy Service! The Get Healthy Service is a free evidence-based phone and online-based health coaching service supporting people over 16 years of age living in NSW to make lifestyle changes. It was great to catch-up with the NSW Health team today to discuss what's been achieved in the first year. We’ve introduced more customisation so that participants choose as many topics as they like and goals that matter to them. Participants can also decide how often and when they receive calls. We’re incredibly proud to be the service provider for NSW Health’s flagship healthy eating and active living program. Learn more at www.gethealthynsw.com.au. Vale Helen Elizabeth Thomas   Diabetes Australia joins with the research community in mourning the passing of Professor Helen Thomas and we express our deepest condolences to her family at this time.   Professor Thomas was head of the Immunology and Diabetes Unit at St Vincent’s Institute, Associate Director of the Institute and a Professorial Fellow of The University of Melbourne. She had a highly distinguished research career graduating BSc(Hons) from UWA then working overseas at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and the European Molecular Biology Laboratory in Heidelberg. Later in her career she was the recipient of numerous research fellowships and grants.   We are proud to have collaborated with Professor Thomas and supported her research career through Diabetes Australia Research Program (DARP) grant funding, including for projects looking at how the insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas are damaged and destroyed in type 2 diabetes, and new ways to treat checkpoint inhibitor induced type 1 diabetes.   Professor Thomas was a true force in diabetes research and she will be sorely missed.

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Professor Helen Thomas, an outstanding medical researcher whose work in type 1 diabetes made a significant impact. All of our love and support goes out to Helen’s husband, Vince, her beloved children Jack and Gaby, and to her extended family and many friends. To read more: https://lnkd.in/gRi2D2yX

We want to hear from people living with diabetes and their carers again to understand the current issues impacting you such as cost of living. It won’t take long to complete, your responses are anonymous, and what you share will help shape how we amplify the voices of the diabetes community to drive change.

Great to see the Dexcom G7 Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) system launched in Australia. Many Australians will be familiar with the Dexcom G6 and will have heard about the availability of the G7 overseas. We know the lag between when new technologies like this are available in other countries and when they’re available in Australia causes frustration for people living with diabetes. We will continue to advocate for changes to approval processes and funding pathways to ensure Australians can access the technology they need to live well. The G7 is not yet subsidised via the NDSS for people living with type 1 diabetes, however we will communicate information in the future as things change.
