We recently attended the Deep Mining Challenge pitch event in Las Vegas at MINExpo INTERNATIONAL, hosted in collaboration with Think & Act Differently (TAD) powered by BHP, Deloitte, Greenspace and Unearthed. This event brought together top innovators and technology leaders from the mining, space, tunnelling, and data industries to explore solutions for deep mining. From Robbins' tunnel boring technologies to space industry pioneers like Blue Origin and AstroForge, and data innovators like Grokit Data and Ideon Technologies, we saw advancements in data collection, in-situ resource utilisation, and more. What a week! Kicking off the MINExpo INTERNATIONAL with a Technical Event on Deep Mining led by #ThinkandActDifferently powered by BHP in collaboration with #GreenSpaceTech powered by Deloitte and Unearthed. The successful session connected ecosystems across innovation, OEMs, miners and procurement. Followed by exploring the exhibition, three giant halls packed with the latest technology and services. Taking the strain For this year’s #hoisting article we go in-depth on mining ropes, with input from three of the market leaders; as well as our usual coverage of hoisting systems & safety. Beginning with ropes, we talked first to Matteo Bruzzone at WireCo. He has more than a decade of experience in the #miningropes market. Bruzzone said the #Casar product is its main underground mining product – this is a premium solution for #productionhoisting. Then we talked to Usha Martin Limited, a global leader in #wireropes. With >150 years of industry experience, its subsidiary Brunton Shaw UK in #Worksop, Nottinghamshire has established itself as a preferred supplier for a large assortment of products with mining one of its main markets. The company’s facility is one of the most modern in Europe. We spoke to Dimitri Bracco Gartner, CEO of #UshaMartin International who is based in the UK. The new, commercially available #Bridon® #hybridropes for #undergroundmining hoist systems combine the best features of both steel and fibre rope, Henry - Heinrich Schultheis at Bridon-Bekaert The Ropes Group told International Mining. The new Bridon® hybrid rope contains steel strands with a high strength #fibrecore, both sharing the axial tensile load. Becker Mining Systems AG's subsidiary in South Africa is a top supplier of #minewinder attachments for the global mining industry. We also review its recent collaboration with global specialists in steel mine winder ropes, verope® Mining. German #hoist system major SIEMAG TECBERG group based in #Haiger has announced the successful signing of contracts for four major mining projects already in 2024. SIEMAG TECBERG-owned Winder Controls (Pty) Ltd - South Africa is also a key #hoistsystem supplier, which includes the #electricalsystems and electrical upgrades. We review two of its projects. While ABB is globally renowned for full hoisting systems, it is also a leader in #hoistmontoring, #automation and #safetysystems. It has just launched the #ABBAbility™ NGX Hoist Monitor Stand-Alone. ABB and EcoHoist earlier this year executed a MoU to collaborate on the development of a vertical material transport solution for underground mines. To get some insight into one key hoists market – that is #shaftsinking #hoists, we spoke to two leading suppliers, who are both Canada-based - Timberland Equipment Limited in #Woodstock, #Ontario and Mine Hoists International Ltd (MHI) in #NorthBay, Ontario which is a division of Mining Equipment Ltd. In a project innovation that will allow early hoisting of ore at Ivanhoe Mines’ #Platreef project, in South Africa, Murray & Roberts Cementation is in the process of repurposing its 3 Shaft – a ventilation shaft – to serve a dual function and also hoist ore.
