Friday at the nature summit by BWD Strategic on the last day of MainStage events at the University of Technology Sydney’s Great Hall. Riveting discussion rolling along like a six-way tennis match: “Failure is essential to the scientific method…” The corporate environment might not have the right attitude to drive evolution in the nature space?” Sebastian Pfautsch GAICD “Commercial focus is not a bad thing - is the problem big enough and is it worth solving? … Is there a market, is it big enough” Christian Kirschenpfadt Facilititor Harry Guinness: Is the nature tech / nature community as big as the climate tech community? “Not yet in Australia” - maybe globally Camille Goldstone-Henry. Wrong question? - “Nature and climate are the same thing” Swaroop Tulsidas. “Nature is harder to measure than other climate tech contexts… it requires bold founders and bold investors” Jim Stuart. “The human layer and interpretation of the data is important - … where’s the translation layer from science to business speak… in less than 30 seconds” Swaroop Tulsidas. “First Nations know what’s on their country. They’ve know for thousands of years”. Technology like EnviroDNA lets that be translated for business and broader society” And it continues! Climate Action Week Sydney.

Two great events today as we wrap up Climate Action Week Sydney, Nature Positive Futures and What's next for Nature Markets? We kicked off with an annoucement from Rayne van den Berg, on the launch of 'Value Australia', Capitals Coalition's hub in Australia, which will raise the bar in Natural and Social Capital reporting. A few key takeouts: - Nature data will always be imperfect, messy and complex, but that shouldnt stop action. - Swaroop Tulsidas mentioned there are huge signals coming from the market such as BlackRock's annoucement recognising Natural Capital as an investment factor and the Goldman Sachs Biodiversity Fund. - To answer 'What is Nature' from a first nations perspective Shevaun Wright told us "Nature is place, its a sense of belonging. You notice nature when its gone and when you've not been in it for a while" - There are great examples of Nature Tech here in Australia, such as Xylo Systems, EnviroDNA @NatureIQ to name a few.. - And some great examples of blended finance for nature and carbon projects Transition Accelerator. - Joshua Bishop said we can invest in nature in multiple ways, through philanthropy, regulation and because it can be profitable. - Radha Kuppalli told us that there is a $7trillion spent in Nature Negative activity, with a nature finance gap. - To repair and restore we need integrity, policy certainty and indigenous rights in a Nature Repair Market. - We are yet to see demand, and what is the true willingness to pay, across different stakeholders, government, business and society. With thanks to the organisers BWD Strategic, University of Technology Sydney, Greenhouse, Treeoma and all of the amazing speakers. How do you leverage 'conference energy high' before being sucked back into the busy vortex? Environmental DNA could be considered a fairly niche topic. Indeed, it is a technology that relies on the brains of highly skilled scientists (me not being one!) and is wavering around the early adopter sphere, promising to jump the "chasm" someday soon (think things like biodiversity monitoring from ocean to land, biosecurity threat and agricultural pest detection). I went to a conference in Wellington, NZ, that was all about the topic. ~300 fellow eDNA nerds were there from 20+ countries. For three whole days plus adjacent drinks and workshops, eDNA was centre stage. 100s of examples of eDNA research, advancements and applications shared. Besides validating my involvement in the eDNA world for the last 8 years, this conference sparked loads of ideas and collaboration opportunities. The next challenge is to pursue all of these and hold onto the hive of conference energy...but how does one effectively do so when getting sucked back into the real world?! Would love to hear your hot tips! Big thanks to everyone involved in the very successful SeDNAs Society eDNA conference and those who inspired my thought and energy - you are on my "to follow up" list! Loved representing EnviroDNA with my amazing colleagues Haylo Roberts Luke Noble and the Southern eDNA Society Board - friendly faces below :) #eDNA #science #environmentalDNA #SeDNAs #conference
