🌊Today is United Nations World Water Day, with this years theme on Glacier Preservation. As climate change accelerates, glaciers are melting at alarming rates disrupting natural water flows and threatening the meltwater that sustains ecosystems, agriculture, and communities globally. Tim Jarvis AM Environment Institute Advisory Board member, confronts this crisis head-on through his powerful storytelling: from recreating Shackleton’s Antarctic journey (now on Netflix) to immersive experiences like Thin Ice VR and the 25zero project. Learn more about Tim’s work and how we can help safeguard our planet: #UNWorldWaterday #WorldWaterDay #Climateaction #glacierpreservation #environmentinstitute #TimJarvis #climatechange #universityofadelaide University of Adelaide , Goyder Institute for Water Research

Blue carbon projects are a win-win for the planet, helping to combat climate change while restoring fragile coastal ecosystems. But are existing laws standing in the way of these critical restoration efforts? Researchers from the Environment Institute have uncovered legal barriers that may be complicating or even preventing tidal restoration projects in South Australia. To bridge this gap, they’ve developed a plain-language stakeholder guide to help governments, communities, and industries navigate the legal landscape and take action. Want to learn more? Scientists at Colossal Biosciences have created a woolly mouse with mammoth-like traits, taking a bold step toward reviving extinct species. But how close are we to real de-extinction? Deputy Director of the Environment Institute, Associate Professor Damien Fordham, calls this a "fascinating scientific breakthrough", highlighting its potential to rescue endangered species by enhancing their resilience to environmental change. While some see this as a game-changer, others caution that full de-extinction remains a distant goal. What if farmers could get real-time insights from AI to combat pests, improve productivity, and reduce environmental impact without crunching complex data? With $490,000 in AEA funding, Professor Volker Hessel and the University of Adelaide are developing Digital Twins in Agriculture, leveraging AI, IoT, and sensor technology to transform decision-making for vineyards and canola farms. "Serafino Wines is proud to collaborate on this important R&D project. We firmly believe innovation enhances Australian wine quality while ensuring sustainability and environmental stewardship." said Maria Maglieri, CEO, Serafino Wines 👉 Learn more here: https://lnkd.in/gAFYEZmk Harpinder Sandhu , Federation University Australia, Constellation Technologies & Operations, Agora High Tech Pty Ltd, Nicola Sasanelli AM, XMPro, ARC Centre of Excellence in Plants for Space #DigitalTwins #AgTech #AI #SustainableFarming #MachineLearning #Innovation #FutureOfAgriculture #environmentinstitute #viticulture #wine

Environment Institute member and Entomologist Andy Austin is advising action as millions of locusts could soon descend on parts of NSW, threatening crops and grazing lands. Early detection and control are crucial to prevent devastating swarms. Look out for locusts in bare, compact soil and act during their early nymph stage for the best chance of control. To learn more about the threat, read the full article featured in YourLifeChoices below. 👉 https://lnkd.in/gGpavUqw #LocustOutbreak #PestControl #AgricultureAustralia #EnvironmentInstitute #UniversityofAdelaide 📸 Egor Kamelev

Dr Adriana Milazzo, Senior Lecturer in the School of Public Health and Environment Institute member, was on a recent panel for HEAL National Research Network, focusing on how we can safeguard and improve human health in growing urban environments. In an article published in Croakey Health Media, Dr Milazzo emphasised the importance of OneHealth approaches in relation to urban planning and human health, further establishing the need for cross-collaboration within sectors, maintain relationships within industry, key policymakers and stakeholders. “I don’t think we can think about healthy environments unless we think about OneHealth,” she said. In a recent ABC Radio interview, Environment Institute member Dr Jamie Wood discussed his groundbreaking study on ancient penguin DNA. His new research, published in Nature Communications, traces 6,000 years of Adélie penguin history in Antarctica, and the decline of southern elephant seals over the past 1,000 years, revealing how the region’s animals responded to climate and environmental shifts over time. Findings from this research will inform crucial efforts to safeguard Antarctic wildlife from multiple emerging threats.
