Helping South Australians conserve, sustain and prosper.
About us
Our purpose is to help South Australians conserve, sustain and prosper. It’s a big role, and we need passionate people to help us achieve it. We help our environment stay healthy. We manage water for the future, respond to climate change, connect people to nature and sustain our state’s natural resources. We take a whole-of-landscape approach to conserving native species and vegetation, working with primary producers, Aboriginal people, land managers, conservationists, communities and all levels of government. We also protect against fire and flood. We help keep the economy healthy. It is our clean environment that produces the premium food and wine that our state is known for – and contributes $18.2b per year to our economy. We connect people to nature. SA’s unique environment provides places for adventure, exercise, congregation and relaxation. We look after iconic sites including Cleland Wildlife Park, Seal Bay and Naracoorte Caves, part of the nature-based tourism industry that generates around $5.3b each year for our state. At DEW, we truly believe we make a difference. Our people are passionate about what they do. Working together, we are tackling some big challenges to help care for SA now and into the future. Happy World Frog Day! World Frog Day is all about raising awareness of the plight of frogs, which have sadly been in decline around the world over the past few decades as a result of climate change, pollution, invasive species, disease and the loss of habitat, among other factors. SA has relatively few frogs compared to the rest of the country. Just 31 out Australia’s 230+ frog species live in SA, although researchers expect more species to be described as more data is collected through surveys and research. And here’s why you should care. Frogs are not just fascinating little creatures in themselves, but a really important indicator of the overall health of our environment. So if chirps, trills and croaks are a regular feature of the soundscape in your town or suburb, it’s a good sign the environment where you live is in good health. And if you’ve never stopped to listen, here are five frog calls you should keep an ear out for if you live in SA: https://bit.ly/safrogs If you want to learn more about frogs in SA, or even apply to become a frog identifier, visit https://lnkd.in/eq9VwiZS If you've snapped a froglet in your backyard, share your photo below. #WorldFrogDay #Frogs #Adelaide #SouthAustralia #Biodiversity #Ecology #Environment

Happy Wildlife Wednesday! You might love them or loathe them, but here are the facts. Spiders play a really important role in our ecosystem. And while they might be sometimes scary, spiders provide an excellent form of natural pest control, helping to manage insect populations, including mosquitoes, cockroaches and flying termites. Here's another fact: They look REALLY cool up close. This incredible image of a net-casting spider was taken in February on the Flinders campus by budding nature photographer Josh Martin. As Josh reliably informs us, "these spiders are named for their unique web construction - they construct a net between their outstretched arms which they use to entangle prey by shooting forward with it. Their incredibly large front-facing eyes help them achieve this at night." "This photo in particular is a photo stack of around five or six photos so I could get good detail on the face." Thanks Josh! We love sharing your nature snaps on our page. To share yours, simply post them in the comments below, or send us a private message. #WildlifeWednesday READ MORE: 8 tips to peacefully co-exist with spiders: https://lnkd.in/gHWzGJBX
