Last week we were pleased to welcome 14 new students from the Nantong University Joint Education Program in Architecture.   Hosted by the School of Architecture and Civil Engineering, this special welcome event brought together esteemed academics and staff, to introduce the students to the start of their Architecture journey at the University of Adelaide – merging with the University of South Australia to become Adelaide University in 2026.   Two current senior students were also recognised for their volunteer work to engage their new peers.   Followed by a networking session, program briefing, and campus tour, the new students had a fantastic start to their journey in Adelaide.

Congratulations to Rebecca Greening (left) and Dr Nina Wootton (right), who have been named recipients of the prestigious The Australian Academy of Science 2025 Max Day Environmental Science Fellowship Award! Rebecca will be investigating the impact of livestock grazing on soil function and ecosystem productivity in the arid regions of South Australia, while Nina will be investigating microplastics in traditional food sources such as fish, mussels, mud crabs and turtles in north-east Arnhem Land. This award highlights the breadth of critical environmental research being undertaken in Australia. The Max Day Foundation's support will enable Rebecca and Nina to make significant contributions to our understanding of ecosystem health and sustainability. Congratulations to Rebecca and Nina! Happy Valentine's Day! 💘 Tinder in 1970? Not quite, but the University of Adelaide Computer Ball came pretty close! In 1969, two students developed a computer program to match attendees with their ideal counterpart for the Adelaide University Science Association (AUScA) inaugural ‘Computer Ball.’ One lucky match? Clinton, a Bachelor of Science student, and Maureen, a medical student. Before the ball, Clinton received a slip of paper printed by campus computers at the time revealing his match and instructing him to reach out. Fast forward 50+ years, and that match turned out to be true love. We're excited to celebrate computer science student Zachary Shinnick, who has been awarded a 2025 Westpac Future Leaders Scholarship! 🙌 Zachary aims support his research in machine learning in his pursuit to create better outcomes for people in aged care. "Australia's rapidly ageing population needs technological advancements to support the healthcare workforce and improve aged care services,” says Shinnick. The Westpac Scholars Trust will award 19 scholars this year who are advancing research in sustainability, technology, and social change, with a combined $3.44 million in funding.
