Want your team to thrive and grow? Honest feedback is key. According to Harvard, "When team members don’t think their boss is great at giving honest feedback, their engagement scores typically take a nosedive." "But on the flip side, leaders who rank in the top 10% at giving honest feedback create teams that rank in the top 23% of engagement." Leaders who withhold critical information necessary for growth are often perceived as unfair. While having open and honest conversations with your staff may not be easy, it's a crucial skill for leaders to develop and practise. Do you have any tips to help leaders learn how to offer honest feedback effectively?

Leading a team in an air-conditioned office is already challenging, but under hostile conditions, it becomes exponentially more complex. Hiring the right leader to command a team at an Antarctic station, where temperatures can plummet below minus 40 degrees Celsius and daylight is scarce during winter, demands a meticulous recruitment process. When the Australian Antarctic Division sought leaders for one of the country's three research stations on the continent, they received over 400 applications. The selection process can take up to eight months, as finding the ideal candidate is critical due to the extreme conditions they'll face. "Following the initial written application, candidates are shortlisted for video interviews, behavioural checks, medical screenings and a 24-hour assessment alongside other potential expeditioners," explained ABC News. Only a select few reach this stage, spending three days at a camp in Tasmania to demonstrate their leadership skills under challenging conditions, including conducting rescue operations. "When you're dealing with people in this really remote, isolated environment, where there are a range of challenges that they're going to experience, our station leaders need to be empathetic, they need to have good emotional intelligence, they need to be able to support their people," said Maree Riley, the Australian Antarctic Division's organisational psychologist. Our team were in Canberra this week to participate in the Australian Government's Meet the Supplier event. FindStaff was proudly selected as a successful respondent for appointment to the People Panel Phase 2 (Labour Hire Services) for the Australian Government. Established in October 2022, the Department of Finance initiated a new Whole of Australian Government (WoAG) mandatory coordinated procurement. This encompasses Recruitment and Search Services, Labour Hire Services, and Contractor Services, collectively known as the People Panel. Grant Aitken, our National Sales Manager, and David Protas, our Senior 360 Recruitment Manager, represented FindStaff at this pivotal event, which aims to streamline service categories from over 20 panels across the Australian Government, leading to improved consistency in terms and standardised rates. Grant shared his thoughts on the event: "This was a fantastic opportunity to connect with a range of Government stakeholders in Canberra. FindStaff values our People Panel Phase 2 contract, and it was great to discuss their workforce solutions requirements and the range of solutions we can offer." Stay tuned to this channel for more updates on our activities and collaborations with the Government through this important panel. #AustralianGovernment #PeoplePanel #IntoWorkAustralia #FindStaff

Your circumstances and opportunities in life play a role in the outcome, and we all know life isn't always fair. However, with the tools and situation you have, you're ultimately the one who can make your goals a reality. When it comes to investing your money, you are solely responsible for what happens to your capital. The same principle applies to your life and career. Taking more risks can lead to higher rewards, but you must also be patient when you face losses, as they are inevitable. On the other hand, being too conservative may limit your growth and delay your progress. Whatever you decide to do with your money, the outcomes are your responsibility. Even if you hire the best financial firm, no one else will take responsibility for your wins or losses. The same goes for your life and career — you are the one in the driver's seat. Yes, circumstances vary. Some people have more resources to invest than others, which may help them advance faster. Life isn't always fair, but what you do with the resources you have is entirely up to you. So, the question is: are you investing in yourself and your goals? If you are the one who can help you succeed, remember to invest in yourself a little each day. What's your take on this?

For this week's #TBT, we're sharing the inspiring story of Henry (pictured right), a welder who didn't mind a lengthy commute because he found a role that truly fits. A year ago, we were on the lookout for a welder to join one of our client's teams in SA. During the recruitment process, our local specialist, Jana Vranic, met Henry and instantly recognised he was the ideal candidate. Jana swiftly arranged an in-person meeting with the client, and the rest is history. Henry was offered the job on the spot and started working full-time. Both Henry and the client were thrilled with the match. Looking to find your next dream job or the perfect addition to your team? Reach out to our recruitment specialists today.
