The Blak Angel Investment Network (BAIN) is breaking down barriers to investment for First Nations founders, forging powerful connections between Indigenous investors and entrepreneurs in Australia and the United States. In late 2024, US Indigenous business leaders visited Australia to exchange insights on capital access, economic self-determination, and circular economies. In the second part of this exchange, an Australian delegation of First Nations investors and leaders recently travelled to the US, engaging with venture capital networks, financial institutions, and Indigenous-led organizations in San Francisco and Dallas. This wasn’t just a learning experience—it was about action, collaboration, and building a shared investment future. The conversations explored how to create a First Nations-led capital ecosystem that supports generational wealth, business growth, and global partnerships. As this cross-Pacific partnership grows, we’re laying the foundations for an Indigenous angel investment network—one that fosters self-determination, drives economic impact, and ensures First Nations capital stays within and benefits our communities. Thank you to the US Consulate for making this mission possible and helping to make it so impactful. First Nations X is proud to support and share Kaarli owner, Sam Edgar’s goal to highlight that Aboriginal culture is still very strong. Kaarli is a 100% Indigenous owned, operated and self funded business, based in Boorloo, (Perth) Western Australia. Local to Western Australia, Sam Edgar and his business partners are from Yawurru and Karrajarri country in the Northwest of Australia, to the Minang and Wadjeri country of the Noongar nation, in the Southwest and everywhere in between. Sam’s big goal is to be able to go around Australia, and find the people that are making the boomerangs and doing the art, sharing their stories highlighting that Aboriginal culture is still very strong. It is a privilege to carry Kaarli Coolamon and tapping sticks, hats and socks across the world, gifting them to Elders of Native American Tribes and to global First Nations people at our events 🖤💛❤️ #Indigenous #art #Aboriginal #culture #sharing #international #FirstNations

The team at First Nations X are prepped and ready for the global launch of First Nations House at SXSW in Austin, Texas! Amanda Smith, President of the Native American Business Association - NABA, and a member of the United States delegation that attended the inaugural First Nations House event in Perth late last year, highlighted the importance of technology and artificial intelligence (AI) for Native and Tribal businesses. "Technology and AI is really important to our Native businesses in our Tribal communities. During the pandemic, when everything was closed down, we found out how big of a need there was and how far behind in technology our tribal communities were," she said. For many Tribal communities, limited access to the internet created barriers to essential services and opportunities. Amanda highlighted how improving technology access can create transformative opportunities. "Once you have that connection and technology, it can really open up a ton of doors and opportunities—everything from education to business through e-commerce to Telehealth and medicine for our Tribal communities," she said. We are looking forward to working with Amanda and the Native American Business Association - NABA in Austin to showcase the innovative opportunities for First Nations entrepreneurs and innovators. #FirstNationsX #Entrepreneurship #IndigenousInnovation #EconomicEmpowerment #FNX #FNXHouse Jahna Cedar OAM Paula Taylor Peter Rossdeutscher AM Kent Matla Raquel Todd Jaynaya Winmar Les Delaforce

I am honoured to be appointed as the new Chair of @Industry Innovation and Science Australia (IISA). IISA is an independent statutory board of entrepreneurs, investors, researchers and educators. IISA provides advice to the Australian Government on industry, innovation, science and research matters. The Board plays an important role in shaping policies that turn these opportunities into real-world impact, delivering social and economic benefits for all Australians. I like that IISA’s advice is evidence based and developed in collaboration with others. Their reports are designed to provide practical actions and shape policy rather than sit on a shelf. I am looking forward to working with my IISA colleagues to influence Australia’s science, technology and research ecosystem over the next three years.
We are pleased to welcome our new Chair, Mr Peter Rossdeutscher AM. Mr Rossdeutscher brings extensive board experience and expertise on Australia's innovation ecosystem stemming from decades of work across multiple sectors and technologies. He has an accomplished track record in demand-led innovation and commercialisation and has successfully bridged the gap between industry and academia throughout his career. Mr Rossdeutscher is a strong advocate for economic and social inclusion. He currently co-chairs First Nations X, helping to empower Indigenous innovation, and previously lead Quantum Girls at the University of Western Australia, designed to encourage students to pursue careers in STEM. We look forward to working with Mr Rossdeutscher over the next three years. Read more here: https://lnkd.in/g9N6BXKA

What a remarkable day it was to officially launch First Nations House, a new beacon for First Nations entrepreneurship, innovation, and leadership. This hub represents a transformative vision: to amplify the voices of First Nations entrepreneurs, bridge gaps in economic opportunities, and connect cultural resilience with modern innovation. Thank you to the US, Mexico, Canada and NZ delegates who joined us :) Highlights and Outcomes: 1. Global Perspectives on Indigenous Leadership The plenary session brought together thought leaders, including Dawn Houle Eric Henson KIM COLLARD and Melissa Wharton , moderated by US Consular General Siriana Nair. The discussions reinforced the critical role of innovative leadership in preserving heritage while enabling economic growth and sovereignty across Indigenous communities worldwide. 2. Driving Investment and Equity This panel, featuring Bill Tai Eli Velasquez Gordon C. and Nicole Johnny, MBA , moderated by CBAs Simone Kenmore, demonstrated the power of targeted investments and culturally informed leadership. 3. Creativity, Culture, and Country This vibrant discussion celebrated the artistry of First Nations creatives like Bart Pigram Jack Steele Kevin Wilson and Shannon McGuire led by Hannah Mathews. The panel explored how storytelling through art, music, and design not only preserves tradition but also serves as a powerful tool for inspiring the next generation. Workshops and Connections Sessions like Capital Connect for First Nations Startups and Leveraging AI to Grow Your Startup (with Ben Cooper) equipped participants with the skills and connections to navigate today’s entrepreneurial landscape. These workshops sparked new collaborations and emphasised the importance of culturally appropriate tools for success. Women’s Gathering The Women’s Gathering created a safe and sacred space for connection, collaboration, and shared learning. Leaders like FNX Co-Chair Jahna Cedar OAM, Amanda Smith, MBA and Natalia Wi inspired attendees to carry forward cultural pride and community strength into all aspects of life. Looking Ahead First Nations X will continue to: - Support First Nations entrepreneurs with tailored programs and mentorship. - Build international partnerships that foster knowledge-sharing and investment. - Amplify the economic and cultural contributions of First Nations businesses, both locally and globally. Acknowledgements: This event wouldn’t have been possible without our incredible FNX board, panellists, passionate volunteers, and generous sponsors. Your support is paving the way for sustainable innovation and empowerment within First Nations communities. Thank you also to Aunty Sally Morgan for the wonky baskets and to uncle Wayne Webb for your Welcome to Wadandi Boodja As First Nations X continues its mission, we are reminded of the profound potential that emerges when we combine cultural heritage with entrepreneurial spirit.
