In recognition of today’s National Close the Gap Day, we reached out to Laurie Stewart, our First Nations Manager to highlight what we’re doing culturally at Footprints. Laurie explained a key focus this year will be to work on: • Our Reconciliation Action Plan, finalising the Reflect and moving towards an Innovate RAP • First Nations Employee Journey Mapping • Enhancing our engagement with First Nations stakeholders and organisations • and our First Nations Cultural Supervision • And coming soon, the launch of our new Indigenous polo shirts!! This year, Close the Gap Day’s theme is "Agency, Leadership, Reform". The day is held annually to show support for health equity for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Reminding us of the power of connection, creativity, and shared stories, was a group of women who came together in Mackay last Thursday to celebrate International Women’s Day. From the start, it was clear something special was unfolding. The energy in the room was palpable, as the team from Footprints (HOWSS, Care Finder, and MyndKynd), local service providers, and the community gathered in solidarity, ready to share, listen, and uplift. Mackay’s Deputy Mayor Karen May GAICD opened the event with a story of her own journey—a testament to the resilience and capability of women. Aunty Veronica’s Acknowledgement of Country was a powerful and moving moment, grounding us in the rich history and culture of the land. The venue, Bottletops & Brushes was a burst of colour and life, reflecting the vibrant energy of the women who filled it. In such a space, creativity, storytelling and the bond of sisterhood was nurtured. Soul Fresh Foods lovingly prepared the food, nourishing our bodies and spirits. Dr Anne Butcher, author and coach, and Haley Crofts from Tailored Services Pty Ltd, business owner and community leader, spoke from a place of wisdom and heart. We were also touched by the kindness of Ellen, who sewed the beautiful gift bags that attendees took home. We are grateful to Daly Bay’s generous donation which made these gifts possible. And to Rita, who represented Mackay West Rotary, and to the Rotary Club for their generous $1000 donation: thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Your support made this event not just possible, but unforgettable. It wasn’t just a gathering—it was a celebration of every woman who dares to dream, to share, to grow, and to love. #FootprintsCommunity #BetterTogether #IWD2025 Images in video: Group photo of all the amazing attendees to the Mackay IWD event; Deputy Mayor Karen May; Dr Anne Butcher; Dr Anne Butcher and Haley Crofts; Ellen receiving flowers; Effie and Melissa from Footprints Community Care finder program; artwork project; Effie giving a heartfelt words to the group; yummy cupcake with Footprints IWD topper; Footprints setup at Bottle Tops and Brushes; IWD artwork at the top where all the attendees placed their colourful handprints; Aunty Veronica giving the Acknowledgement of Country; Effie performing a moving Maori song and dance to commemorate the day; HOWSS logo and the text "Celebrating Amazing Women"; Thank-you to Soul Fresh Foods, Bottle Tops and Brushes and Mackay West Rotary.

Every year in March, Social Prescribing Day, is a celebration of people, organisations and communities who make social prescribing happen. What is Social Prescribing? Social Prescribing is an approach which connects people to activities, groups and services in their community. This provides them with support to meet their emotional, practical and social needs and reduce feelings of isolation and loneliness. Footprints Community has many wonderful programs to connect clients with resources and support to improve their health and wellbeing, such as our social prescribing – Social Health Connect and Care Coordination Service programs. Did you know that nearly half of Australians were born overseas, or have at least one parent who was born overseas? This week is Harmony Week which recognises and celebrates diversity in our community and unites Australians from all different cultural backgrounds under the values of freedom, respect, fairness, democracy and equal opportunity. During this week, March 21st is the official Harmony Day and the date coincides with the United Nations International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. Orange is the colour of Harmony Week. Traditionally, orange signifies social communication, meaningful conversations, freedom of ideas and encouragement of mutual respect. Why not wear something orange during Harmony Week to show your support for cultural diversity and an inclusive Australia. #harmonyweek #everyonebelongs #FootprintsCommunity #diversity #culturalandlinguisticdiversity

When women are at their best, they are incredible. That is what we saw at our recent International Women’s Day (IWD) event held in Brisbane to celebrate the beautiful and resilient women we’ve met through our Housing Older Women’s Support Service (HOWSS). Around 50 people gathered, providing women who have engaged with us over housing risk concerns, with a few hours of refreshments, pampering, creative activities and social connection. Australian Greens Spokesperson on Women, Senator Larissa Waters opened the event. In her address, she instilled hope for a future in which policy reform could protect housing as a human right and could address the current crisis which is seeing too many women over the age of 45 caught in a poverty trap and left without a home. Our team member, Ashley, also gave an emotional address, as she reflected on the event’s success in bringing women together for a few hours of shared strength and friendship in support of the UN’s IWD theme, “March Forward”. Attendees were encouraged to embrace the theme after enjoying free haircuts from Lavelle, free massages from Latin Temple Beauty, some delicious food from Superior Fruit and Kitchen Graceville and pot painting. They also didn’t leave empty handed. They each received a pamper pack, made by members of Zonta and could take with them their painted pot, planted with a succulent. The event was made possible thanks to the donations and support from Zonta Club of Brisbane River (for $500 and on the day assistance), Bunnings Newstead, Better Together Housing, 13Cabs, Footprints Community and HOWSS. Thank you everyone for an inspiring IWD! An amazing group of clients and staff from Housing Older Women's Support Service gathered to celebrate at our recent International Women's Day (IWD) event on the Sunshine Coast. Joining the group were colleagues from Better Together Housing, Kyabra and Nambour Community Centre. The event created a safe space of warmth and peacefulness for everyone to chat and connect at the Beerwah Meeting Place, a beautiful space surrounded by floor to ceiling windows overlooking a creek and lush greenery. The women were guided through a mindfulness activity and watercolour painting art immersion led by Maggie from Better Together Housing. Thistle in the Woods laid out a delicious catering spread and the Glasshouse Mountains Christian College generously provided pamper packs for each of the women. Thank you so much to everyone who attended and made the event possible, especially Bonnie from HOWSS. Pictured (in order): All the amazing attendees of the HOWSS IWD event; Bonnie from HOWSS with Rebecca from Glasshouse Mountains Christian College; Beautiful watercolour art created on the day; Delicious food from Thistle in the Woods; Watercolour activities in the beautiful Beerwah Meeting Place; All the amazing attendees of the event waving.
