🔍 The Hidden Threat to Steel – Corrosion Below the Surface When we think about corrosion in construction, we often imagine steel exposed to the atmosphere. But according to Peter Golding, CEO of GAA, it’s the unseen portions of steel buried underground that are at an even greater risk. Soil composition plays a pivotal role in how fast steel corrodes, with factors like soil resistivity, moisture, pH, and bacterial presence accelerating the process. This complexity is heightened across Australia and New Zealand, where soil properties vary widely by region. Galvanizing as a Shield: Hot dip galvanized coatings provide crucial protection by corroding at a much slower rate than steel. As GAA's David Harrison explains, these coatings delay the onset of steel corrosion, and even then, zinc corrosion products help mitigate further damage. Site-Specific Protection: To safeguard buried steel, engineers should consider protective barriers, especially at the soil-air interface, where fluctuating oxygen and moisture levels are most corrosive. From epoxy coatings to select backfill techniques, each solution must be customized to the site’s unique environment. GAA commits to a new Environmental Product Declaration for hot dip galvanizing. The Galvanizers Association of Australia (GAA) has committed to a new Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) for hot dip galvanizing. Collaborating with thinkstep-anz, the GAA is updating its industry-leading EPD, initially published in 2019, to transparently present verified data on the environmental impact of the Australian batch hot dip galvanizing industry from a lifecycle perspective. Hot dip galvanizing shields steel from corrosion by enveloping it in a zinc layer, safeguarding it from environmental corrosion. This process is applicable to various steel types, shapes, sizes, and functions, playing a crucial role in daily Australian life. Preservation of steel structures and components has far-reaching environmental, economic, and social implications. By preventing corrosion, hot dip galvanizing extends the life of steel structures, conserving natural resources. At the end of its life, galvanized steel can be easily reused, remade, or recycled, highlighting its inherent sustainability. The GAA is excited to collaborate once again with thinkstep-anz, an independent sustainability firm, that has been helping businesses to succeed sustainably for more than 18 years. The new EPD is anticipated to be published in the second quarter of 2025. In the meantime, the current EPD can be viewed and downloaded from EPD Australasia or directly from the GAA.
