Across Glencore’s operations, we’ve hosted R U OK? Day events. The morning teas, presentations and BBQ lunches were a great reminder that you don't need to be an expert to reach out - just a good friend and a listener. One simple question could change their life. Just ask RUOK?

Thanks to technological advancements, we’ve been able to improve safety in the way we mine. One example is technology like a remote longwall shearer used in underground coal operations. Our people can now operate this equipment 15 kilometres away, meaning fewer people are on the coal face interacting with the equipment.

Congratulations to our Mount Isa Mines Medical Laboratory on receiving first class results. The National Association of Testing Authorities (NATA) is Australia's leading authority for laboratory quality assessment. To meet industry standards, Mount Isa Mines Medical Laboratory undergoes regular evaluations and audits through NATA's external quality assurance program. Blood lead level analysis is conducted on-site at Mount Isa Mines in a dedicated medical laboratory, which operates under the Analytical Laboratory. This lab holds NATA accreditation for 19 test methods, including blood lead analysis. NATA provides an independent evaluation of our quality systems and endorses our technical competence in testing. For over 50 years, the medical laboratory has played a crucial role in the company's commitment to ensuring a safe working environment for its employees.

Congratulations to brothers Riley and Aidan for acing their Open Cut Examiner (OCE) tests - on the very same day! They’ve followed in their dad's footsteps, continuing the family legacy as part of the Glencore Coal team. Aidan is based at our Hail Creek Open Cut operation while Riley is at our Collinsville coal mine with their father, Mark. When speaking of his son’s recent qualifications, Mark said it was a very special milestone for the family. “This is reward for the hard work they’ve put in over the last couple of years, and my wife Sandra and I are very proud,” Mark said. “The Sverdloff name in Collinsville goes back to the early sixties. My father started here as a mine electrician in 1961, and I joined as an apprentice in 1981. Since then, I’ve had the opportunity to work in various roles and have come back for a fourth time with Glencore.” Across our operations, we have fathers working with their sons or daughters. We’d like to wish a Happy Father’s Day to all the dads working across our Australian business.

Through Glencore’s ongoing investment at Murrin Murrin Operations – 25 years and counting – the site is a living example of what large-scale critical-minerals mining and processing looks like in Australia 👍 Alongside lithium, copper and rare earth elements, nickel and cobalt are ‘critical minerals’ because of their role in key technologies, such as renewables and jet engines. There are two key types of ore deposits from which nickel is mined: laterite and sulphide. Murrin Murrin is Australia’s largest producer of cobalt and third biggest producer of nickel – capable of outputting around 3,300 tonnes of cobalt and more than 40,000 tonnes of nickel each year 😮

Earlier this year, Glencore’s Port Operations in Townsville received an $11 million facelift. Glencore manages and operates the Berth 8 shiploader at the Port of Townsville, along with associated storage and logistics facilities. At the port, Glencore maintains three concentrate storage buildings where both our own and third-party concentrates are received and securely stored for export. Due to the composition of concentrates and the humid conditions in Townsville, Glencore must continuously maintain the integrity of our storage buildings, as construction materials can deteriorate and corrode over time. To address this, the Chemistry team at James Cook University conducted experiments to test alternative materials and surface coatings. After careful consideration, a combination of composite and painted materials was chosen to ensure the longevity of the roofs and walls. Project Manager, Justin Remmer said; “Completing the project in conjunction with everyday operations meant compliance and safety measures were carefully considered daily to ensure the wellbeing of staff and contractors and to minimise disruption to the business. “Managing construction work on the roof and the lack of trafficable access, meant work was carried out via alternative methods including purpose-built crane-lifted work boxes, mobile elevated work platforms and dedicated walkways.”

Make way for Bulga Coal’s 13 new Komatsu Australia 930E Tier 4 haul trucks. The new additions to the fleet took 6 weeks for Komatsu to assemble the equipment before they were trucked to Bulga for the final build. They are the second largest truck in Bulga’s fleet and are quieter, more reliable to maintain and have reduced emissions. Thanks to Komatsu for sharing the journey to Bulga mine and their final assembly onsite.

It's National Skills Week. A chance to spotlight how Vocational Education and Skills Training can be the ultimate game changer in your career and life. Earlier this year, Oaky Creek Coal welcomed six first-year apprentices to its highly sought-after Apprenticeship Program. This year’s intake saw newcomers aged between 17 and 21-years old with their arrival bringing the total number of apprentices at the site to 22. The program is a valuable way for apprentices to gain real-life experience on the job while setting up their career. “They certainly had their eyes opened. There’s a big difference between learning in the classroom and being on the ground at a mining operation,” said Jonathan Harris, site coordinator of the program and Technology Superintendent.
