When job seeker Jesse joined Global Skills Disability Employment Services, she was determined to gain work despite physical challenges from previous cancer treatment. Jesse had been undergoing treatment and a period of recovery in the five years leading up to being connected with her Penrith Employment Consultant Munazzah. Jesse was provided with comprehensive support tailored to her needs. This included pre-vocational support including confidence training, career exploration, self-marketing strategies and guidance on navigating the hidden job market. In early March 2024, utilising her new job search skills, Jesse found a food truck driving role and successfully secured an interview. Munazzah further supported Jesse with mock interview sessions relevant to the role, ensured the role was suitable for her limitations and Jesse got the job. Global Skills has continued to support Jesse with practical assistance and workplace mentoring, including orthopaedic shoes to support her health circumstances and fuel vouchers. Congratulations to Jesse who has now reached her 6-month employment milestone. • Congratulations to Carly, a job seeker from Global Skills Baulkham Hills, on reaching your 6-month employment milestone! At 47, Carly joined Global Skills Prisoner Release Program in December 2023, via the Corrections NSW Work Readiness Program. Her goal was to find full-time work and prepare for her return to the community after five years of being justice involvement. Carly shared, “My Work Readiness Consultant and the team at Global Skills supported me to build my work skills. I completed a White Card course and a Forklift course, and I also obtained my photo licence. With all this in place, I was ready to apply for jobs. After being justice involved for 5 years, I’d lost touch with how to apply for jobs—everything changes so quickly. Most applications are online now. The Work Readiness Team and Global Skills gave me the guidance I needed and the confidence that there are employers out there who want to hire people with my skills, including those who have been justice involved. I received financial support, emotional encouragement, and the motivation to keep pushing forward. The idea that while you’re not employed, you can continue polishing your skills and gain new skills to make you even more employable is fantastic.” Carly worked hard to increase her skills and soon secured a full-time position as a Store Person. Global Skills and Work Readiness made sure she had everything she needed to start, from work clothing to an Opal Card. We've stayed connected for 6 months and are pleased to see Carly thriving in work. Carly confirmed, “I am definitely enjoying work. I work with good people and that makes all the difference. The people I work with make you look forward to going to work every day. I am in a good company, surrounded by good people. My hours are great and I’m paying the bills. Global Skills gave me the support and encouragement I needed to go out into the workplace and seek employment and because of my success, I’ve been able to begin my new life.” Congratulations Carly, from the entire team at Global Skills and thank you for generously sharing your story. #Congrtulations #employmentmilestone #jobseekers #JusticeInvolved #WorkforceAustralia #GlobalSkills #employmentservices [image description] Female hand scans a barcode on a label attached to a cardboard box.

  • When Lana joined Global Skills Lake Haven in 2022, she was seeking support to navigate a dramatically changed job search landscape since looking for work as a teenager. Reflecting on her experience, Lana shared, “I have been raising my family since 2009 and haven’t job searched for quite some time. I was nervous but more than that, I wasn’t sure about what to do next. The job search process has changed so much since I was a teenager. There are so many more steps now, and a lot of it is online. For instance, applying for my current job involved a video interview via Teams, which was a first for me. We didn’t have Teams when I was 16.” Lana was connected with her Global Skills Employment Consultant, Racheal who helped her navigate the ever-evolving job search environment. She also supported Lana to identify and build on the many transferable skills she developed as a parent, including obtaining a First Aid and CPR Certificate. Lana shared, “Racheal has been incredibly supportive throughout my job search. I love that I can talk to her, she’s always so encouraging.” Racheal encouraged Lana to participate in the Work for the Dole program at Vinnies Wyong to gain some current work experience and build her confidence. Lana enjoyed it so much that she completed a second placement at Vinnies Budgewoi. She shared, “I loved working at Vinnies and feel it helped me build my physical strength and confidence. I particularly enjoyed chatting with the staff and serving customers, especially the older customers. I love talking to and spending time with older people.” Towards the second end of Lana’s 8-week placement, Racheal connected her with a job opportunity through one of our employers, Residenz. The position was for a Home Care Domestic Assistant and with her affinity to work with older people, her experience as a mother, her new customer service skills and her First Aid and CPR Certificates, Lana was perfect for the job. She started her new role in July. Lana shared, “A lot of tasks I do in my new role is similar to what I would do at home caring for a family, just for a different age group. I love chatting with my clients while I work, I really enjoy the conversations and the stories. It feels great knowing I’m making a difference in their lives. With my first aid and CPR training, I feel confident that I can respond effectively if needed. Plus, it’s wonderful to have an additional source of income to support my family. I’ve moved from raising children to being out of the house every day. I’m busier, that's for sure.” Congratulations Lana from the entire team at Global Skills and thank you for sharing your story. • October is Cyber Security Awareness Month and an annual reminder for all Australians to stay secure online. The theme for 2024 is “Cyber Security is Everyone’s Business.” The Australian Signals Directorate’s Australian Cyber Security Centre (ASD's ACSC) leads the way in helping us improve our cyber security. They encourage us to take a moment to discuss cyber security with family, friends, and colleagues, and to motivate them to take action. Cybercrime reports are on the rise, and malicious online activity continues to threaten every Australian. Cyber security truly is everyone’s business. By taking some simple steps, we can help make Australia the safest place to connect online. Here are four easy steps you can take to boost your cyber security: 1. Turn on multi-factor authentication. 2. Keep your devices and software up to date. 3. Use strong and unique passwords, like a passphrase. 4. Recognise and report phishing attempts. For the latest alerts and advice, visit cyber.gov.au. Also, be sure to watch the ASD ACSC’s Cyber Security Awareness Month video, which shares more simple steps you can take to improve your cyber security.
