    🎉 BIG NEWS 🎉 We’ve launched into beauty, building upon Good On You’s decade-long expertise and trusted sustainability ratings system for fashion. This sees Good On You scale up industry-focused solutions for retailers, tech platforms, and commercial real-estate, upgrading our suite of enterprise tools to help your businesses assess the sustainability performance of brand portfolios and credibly engage consumers. Our ratings dashboard will now include 230+ beauty brands in addition to the 6,000+ fashion brands we’ve rated, with more brands added each week. Moreover, our ratings API will allow you to integrate the data into internal systems and create engaging consumer-facing experiences. Good Measures, a sustainability tool for brands, will also be updated, to help both fashion and beauty brands understand their rating, with tailored guidance on how to improve. “Since 2015, we’ve helped millions of people worldwide make better choices on our channels and through our retail partnerships,” says Sandra Capponi, co-founder. “Our ratings have helped retailers like FARFETCH, Klarna, Microsoft, and Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield-Rodamco Westfield track performance and engage consumers.” The Good On You team has spent the past year consulting with experts and building the new beauty methodology, which covers haircare, makeup, and skincare brands.     Halloween is one of the spookiest days of the year—but what’s scarier is how unsustainable brands trick you into harming people, the planet, and animals 😱 Here are a few ways that fashion and beauty brands do it… 👹 Placing the burden of waste on consumers, as exemplified by only 2% of beauty brands featuring products that minimise packaging 👹 Insufficient emissions reductions, considering only 5% of brands that purchase carbon offsets have actually implemented initiatives to reduce emissions in raw material reduction 👹 Ripping off Indigenous culture, small artists, businesses, and more sustainable brands for profit 👹 Lacking transparency in any stage of production, with only 4% of beauty brands rated publishing complete supplier lists 👹 Under paying garment workers, as 86% of the world’s most profitable fashion brands either don’t disclose anything about living wages or are confirmed to not pay living wages 👹 Upholding colonialist and patriarchal structures that take advantage of local communities and non-renewable resources 👹 Using animals as “workers”, an example being that 67% of rated beauty brands cannot confirm if monkey labour occurs in their supply chain Don’t fall for these tricks, by always ensuring that you understand how a brand operates, seeking out transparency in your purchases 👻 Better yet, be on the lookout for treats, more sustainable alternatives to the fashion and beauty model like limited production runs, circular and vegan practices, and other inclusive, considerate approaches 🧡 🍬 What are your favourite sustainable fashion and beauty treats?     Head of Ratings at Good On You

    I’m excited to announce the launch of Good On You's first comprehensive review of some of the world’s largest beauty brands, assessing how well they tackle people, planet, and animal issues across their entire value chains. Our methodology aims to hold all players accountable and spotlight those leading by example. Over the last decade, consumer sustainability concerns have grown across sectors like fashion, energy, and food. Yet, the beauty industry has seen less scrutiny, allowing some poor performers to go unchallenged, while those driving positive change often remain unrecognised. Like fashion, beauty supply chains are long and complex, with many impacts hidden deep within, where brands have less direct visibility and control. Labour rights, in particular, remain obscured within these chains, often far from a brand’s immediate influence. However, informed citizens can drive significant change just as we’ve seen in fashion. We shouldn’t wait for a tragedy to spark action; we need to ensure human rights are respected and workers treated fairly around the globe. Essential ingredients like palm oil, mica, coconut, and cocoa bring significant human rights challenges, including child labour, forced labour, and poor wages. Yet, brands aren’t disclosing nearly enough about how they identify these issues or what actions they’re taking to prevent them. Citizen action has already motivated some beauty brands to adopt more sustainable packaging solutions, from reusable containers to refillable products. While this is impactful, it’s just one area where brands can improve. Because packaging is a visible part of a product, it’s often the first change, but there’s still an uneven pace of change across other critical areas like water use and ecological restoration. Brands need to be courageous and embrace the changes necessary for a truly sustainable future. They should prioritise ecological restoration, eliminating animal harm, and empowering the people who produce their products, from farmers to ingredient collectors and miners. By embracing these changes, brands have the opportunity to lead a transformation toward a more sustainable beauty industry, and some of the leading brands are already taking inspirations leaps to get there.     Since rating 239 beauty brands, we’ve noticed a few key findings about the industry 👀 Data Product Manager Luis Rodriguez de Cespedes (he/him) looked through the numbers alongside editor-at-large JD Shadel to identify trends and bigger picture items of interest for the industry to be aware of. Here’s what he found 🔍 “It’s clear that whichever way you do the math, the beauty industry is disclosing even less than fashion,” Luis explained. “In many cases, brands may not even know where the thousands of ingredients in their products are sourced from.” “Be it palm oil linked to deforestation, mica with high risk of child labour, or squalene sourced from deep sea shark liver, the risk of impacts on people, planet, and animals are simply too large to give your favorite sunscreen the benefit of the doubt.” Luis believes there is a small sliver of a silver lining though. “This makes the few brands that are doing the work even more impressive,” he says ❣️ Are you a business or brand working in haircare, makeup, skincare, and other beauty spaces?     The Victoria’s Secret fashion show returned last week, bringing with it a high-production runway that brought everyone from the Hadid sisters to LISA of BLACKPINK to the runway 👠 This was the brand’s first show in six years, and, while it was a welcome return for some, let’s not forget that the brand stopped doing shows after a backlash for its position on body positivity and transgender models 👀 If you zoom in further, you’ll find they really aren’t angels at all but that they treat the planet and people quite poorly 🚫 Might we suggest a few alternatives?
