Exciting news from our Strzelecki Nature Link! 🌿 We've partnered with Bird Habitats to install 48 Thermal Haven Nest Boxes® to support local wildlife on Boonwurrung Country in Victoria. 🐦 These innovative boxes mimic natural tree hollows, providing a safe haven for birds, arboreal mammals, and more. They're crafted from eco-friendly materials and tested under full sun exposure, offering a consistent thermal profile that benefits our native species. Greenfleet restores legally protected, native forests to restore nature and provide wildlife habitat. While forests become established, it can take decades for tree hollows and branches to form. These nesting boxes offer immediate homes to local wildlife, while the forest grows. Already, they're being utilised by local wildlife, showing promising results! 🙌 Want to learn more about this project? The Strzelecki Nature Link is restoring a 3.5 kilometre stretch of contiguous koala habitat! 🌳 Mt Emily is one of four properties making this expansive project. We began restoring the site in 2024, building on the revegetation work within the Strzelecki Nature Link since 2017. The Link is extending vegetation for local wildlife, removing carbon, and helping to restore native ecosystems across land that was previously cleared for farming. As the native forest grows, it is delivering climate action on behalf of our supporters. The Strzelecki Nature Link will draw down over 400,000 tonnes of carbon from the atmosphere over its lifetime, the equivalent to removing around 93,000 average vehicles from Australia’s roads for a year! Mt Emily alone will remove over 100,000 tonnes. The forest will also provide habitat for the abundant local birdlife. We have planted nectar producing flowering plants like hop goodenia (Goodenia ovata) to attract insects and prickly tea-tree (Leptospermum continentale) which creates dense, spiky protection for small birds. It’s International Women’s Day! Greenfleet’s focus is on restoring ecosystems and protecting our planet. With climate change disproportionately impacting women, and we know that gender equality is vital in this work. This year’s theme is ‘March Forward: For ALL women and girls. Rights. Equality. Empowerment.’ It calls for action that can unlock equal rights, power and opportunities for all, and a feminist future where no one is left behind. We chatted with our Deputy CEO, Annabel O'Neill, who is in her sixth year with Greenfleet and told us why International Women’s Day is still so important. “The empowerment of women and girls is essential. Not only for the advancement of society, but also for the well-being of our planet. Gender inequality and climate change are interconnected, and climate damage disproportionately affects women.” Reflecting on the current global climate, Annabel said, “right now, the status of our planet, political structures and economic systems seems tenuous. As we negotiate these global challenges, we have an opportunity to reset our social structures, ensuring they are more inclusive and better equipped to address the needs of all women.” Greenfleet remains focused on growing hope and restoring nature. We’re proud to be working with many women in our team and network who, like Annabel, are committed to this important work. Battery Creek is one of Greenfleet’s most established forests and has been growing on Boonwurrung Country in South Gippsland, Victoria for over 25 years. As this forest develops, it is becoming more biodiverse. A recent study revealed seven new flora species are now growing at Battery Creek that were not part of the original planting. Our work at Battery Creek is also providing habitat for local native wildlife, as the established forest attracts some unique fauna. This includes providing a habitat corridor for lyrebirds, whose numbers have declined in the region due to land clearing. In 2013, there was also an exciting discovery of a unique insect species called the bog gum psyllid (Ctenarytaina bipartite). These small cicada-like insects reside in our forest and feed on bog gum leaves (Eucalyptus kitsoniana). Battery Creek is also a haven for kangaroos, wallabies and wombats. This forest is legally protected for 100 years, providing safe habitat for its inhabitants for future generations. Today is World Wildlife Day 🦘 By restoring and protecting Australia’s forests, Greenfleet is providing homes to some of our most unique wildlife. Each year on March 3, the United Nations World Wildlife Day celebrates the critical role native animals play in maintaining the earth’s biodiversity. Since 1997 we have restored habitat by planting over 11.2 million native trees across over 550 protected forests. The native wildlife that will benefit from our work includes: 🦜 endangered swift parrots in Victoria and NSW 🐨 endangered greater gliders and koalas in Queensland 🦎 collared delmas in southeast Queensland 🐨 Strzelecki koalas in South Gippsland, Victoria In 2024, Greenfleet restored around 460 hectares of legally protected koala habitat in Australia. This is vital to providing long-term homes and food sources to these iconic animals. We also discovered Strzelecki koalas residing in our Strzelecki Nature Link. This species is significant, as it descends from Victoria’s original koala gene pool and has not been translocated. Greenfleet protects our forests with an on-title legal agreement for up to 100 years, ensuring long-term, sustainable homes for our unique animals. This Greenfleet forest is creating habitat for local birdlife! 🦜 Avoca is growing on Wiradjuri Country, north of Wagga Wagga in NSW and next to the Buddigower Nature Reserve. This region is known for its birdlife, and our restoration of this forest is supporting species moving through the area. More than 200 native wildlife species are known to inhabit Buddigower Nature Reserve near Avoca. These include birds such as the Shy Heathwren, Varied Sittella and Brown Treecreeper. Greenfleet's restoration also includes planting habitat for threatened species, such as the endangered Swift Parrot as it migrates along the east coast of Australia. Since 2013, Greenfleet has revegetated hundreds of hectares, creating a legally protected forest to support the habitat of these native species. Avoca is also delivering climate action and helping support the area's significant biodiversity values. Celebrating Women in Conservation Breakfast is a source of inspiration each year, especially when it can be hard to maintain hope in the face of parallel climate and biodiversity crises. Bringing together diverse groups from across the conservation space, we share in our joint commitment to protecting and restoring nature. Members of Greenfleet’s Board and team attended the event in Melbourne, hearing from incredible people working in conservation. Keynote speaker Teagan Shields (PhD) (pictured) is a proud Arabana descendant, working in the community engagement and environmental sector. She chairs the Federal Minister for Environment’s Indigenous Advisory Committee and is currently undertaking a PhD at the University of Melbourne. Teagan reflected on the importance of deep engagement with First Nations people and respecting their wisdom in the work we all do. Her powerful message reminds us of the incredible knowledge Traditional Custodians hold and how their direct involvement in conservation benefits community, Country, and nature. Thanks to our hosts Bush Heritage Australia, Trust for Nature, Rachel Lowry and Corinne Proske for bringing together hundreds of likeminded people for another incredible event. #womeninconservation #climateaction #climatehope #collaboration #IWD2025 Annabel O'Neill Amanda Cornwall Dr Dominique Hes Rebecca Peake Jacqui Mier Jo Hitchin Janine Buesnel Florence Cuming
