A few exciting big updates from our grant winners this week: 1. Glencore and Yancoal have withdrawn the largest coal mining project ever proposed in NSW from consideration under Federal environment law, in a move that could prevent more than one billion tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions being released into the atmosphere, an outcome Lock the Gate has been working hard to achieve: https://lnkd.in/guvTgr32 2. On Tuesday Chris Bowen launched a "community-led electrification trial" for 500 homes in the postcode 2515 near Wollongong, backed by $5.4 million in Australian Renewable Energy Agency funding, thanks to the incredible work of Rewiring Australia. At a national level, this is feeding into Labor's plans to consider an 'Electrify Everything' platform ahead of the election to relieve cost of living pressure for low and middle income earners: https://lnkd.in/g2E7Rjaz 3. Four Corners published a hard-hitting expose on water licences in the NT with major focus on Singleton, Ali Curung and water justice, driven by our Caring for Country grant partners Arid Lands Environment Centre: https://lnkd.in/gbPvgKAR Wins like these – stopping massive coal projects, advancing national electrification policies, and bringing critical environmental justice issues to public attention – happen because of sustained and strategic advocacy. Philanthropy plays a key role in funding these efforts, resourcing campaigns, legal challenges, and community organising that shape national conversations, public policy and corporate behavior. This is how we unlock change at the scale and speed that the climate crisis demands. If you're looking to fund impactful climate action we highly recommend you get in touch with these brilliant organisations to learn more about the important work they do. If you're interested in learning more about funding advocacy – get in touch with us too, Groundswell is here to help. #climateaction #philanthropy #systemschange #advocacy #climateaction #philanthropy #systemschange

Bravo to our 2023 grant recipients Rewiring Australia – amazing to see this initiative hit the headlines yesterday proving climate solutions are a vital to reducing the cost of living for Australians. #ClimateAction #ElectrifyEverything #EnergyTransition
Big news: the Australian Government is considering a bold 'Electrify Everything' plan, which includes household battery incentives as part of a cost of living relief strategy for low and middle-income earners. This progress is a testament to the tireless work of Rewiring Australia, one of our Groundswell Giving grant recipients, who have been pivotal in advocating for large-scale electrification. It’s inspiring to see the ripple effects of their vision and advocacy reaching the national stage! This is such a powerful move Climate Integrity - Groundswell Giving was very proud to support this organisation last year and we are excited to see their impact hit the headlines today 💫
Today Climate Integrity lodged a formal complaint with the ACCC asking for an investigation of Qantas' sustainability and net zero claims: Flying is a hard to decarbonise industry that will remain reliant on fossil fuels well into the future. Qantas is an airline that emits 17.6 million tonnes of C02 a year – claiming to be "acting sustainably" or "driving sustainability" is misleading. Qantas "fly carbon neutral" check box gives customers the false impression that by contributing a few dollars to conservation the negative impacts of their flight have been compensated for or neutralised. Qantas' claim that the company is on a path to net zero by 2050 in line with the goals of the Paris agreement lacks credibility and is not sufficiently substantiated by its disclosures. Read our complaint and more on the solutions at https://lnkd.in/gNb2xbpH
For a few extra dollars, Qantas offers to 'offset' your flight. But does it really do anything for the climate?

So proud of our grant winners Rewiring Australia for this monumental day of impact 💫🎉
Totally buzzing after the launch of the Electrify 2515 Community Pilot today! The Federal Climate & Energy Minister Chris Bowen came to Thirroul to announce $5.4mil to fund the research pilot - supporting 500 homes to electrify so we can do this at scale so every Australian can electrify more easily. Check out Electrify 2515 website for more info: www.electrify2515.org

Well, that was fun! Our CEO Arielle Gamble talking at SXSW Sydney alongside Kiranpreet Kaur Dhillon, Andrew Davies and Dan Ilic about how stories shape culture and culture shapes politics. If advertising got us into this mess, can it get us out? The answer is yes, but we must become more courageous telling the complex stories of our time and bring more honesty, humour and humanness into our storytelling. #sxswsydney2024 #climateaction

Ok, good media and creative folks, there has been much chat about how to use your special powers for good lately. I am speaking at #SXSWSydney next week alongside Arielle Gamble, Dan Ilic and Kiranpreet Kaur Dhillon talking about how to become climate action heroes through storytelling. They probably know some stuff, and I appear to be sprouting a Kardashian-esque model from my head... so should be good! Come along to explore how to create content that is good and does good. We're on stage on Tuesday October 15 at 12pm - more coming on the full activation we're working on at B Lab Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand as part of the Tech & Innovation Expo! Powerful words from our CEO Arielle Gamble on how we cannot accept hurricanes like Milton and Helene as our new normal. These devastating climate disasters must be tipping points for transformative action, starting with a narrative shift that these tragedies are man-made and fueled by burning fossil fuels like coal, oil, and gas. #ClimateCrisis #HhurricaneHelene #HurricaneMilton #EndFossilFuels #ClimateAction #Resilience #HurricaneMilton #ExtremeWeather
This morning, I opened the news and quietly lost my mind—coverage of Hurricane Milton, set to devastate Florida, was buried halfway down my feed. How did we get to a point where life-threatening climate disasters are treated like a footnote? We can’t just accept this as ‘The New Normal.’ Here’s why we need to harness moments like these to drive a narrative tipping point for transformative climate action.
