Do you have a history of asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease? Researchers from The University of Western Australia are developing and implementing new diagnostics to guide the treatment of patients with both disorders. If you have lived experience of asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, we encourage you to apply to be a part of this Consumer Advisory Group. You will be part of a team of consumers who will use their lived experience of respiratory disease to advise the researchers. While ovarian cancer often doesn’t get the coverage more common cancers like melanoma do, it is not any less deadly or life changing. In fact, it remains one of the deadliest cancers for older women in Australia. Young mother Upinder Panesar found this out herself, and while she has fortunately made it through chemotherapy and immunotherapy treatment, the effect ovarian cancer had on her and her family is clear through her emotions. Sadly, many women never have the chance to rebuild their lives like Upinder. Despite an almost 50 per cent mortality rate for those diagnosed with ovarian cancer, more than 70 percent of cases are only discovered in the late stages of the cancer’s development. New technology being driven by Professor Alistair Forrest and researchers at the Perkins may radically change this. And it is the hope that more women like Upinder will be able to lead active, healthy lives despite the heartbreaking obstacle cancer can be. The Perkins is grateful to the 9 News Perth for helping shed more light on the ongoing fight against the world’s toughest diseases. Perkins lab leaders Prof Gina Ravenscroft and Nigel Laing AO recently attended the Australasian Neuromuscular Network's annual General Meeting, where they met and shared their insights into neuromuscular disorders with fellow researchers. Collaboration between research organisations is an ever-important aspect in fighting the world's toughest diseases, and Profs. Ravenscroft and Laing are grateful for the opportunity to take part. Next on the list: Prof. Ravenscroft herself will chair a joint meeting between the ANN and the Asian Oceanian Myology Center, which should be a another big step in national and international partnerships in this vital area of research. #ANN #AOMC #NeuromuscularDisorders #ResearchCollaboration #Myology #MedicalResearch #HealthInnovation #AustralasianNeuromuscularNetwork
Wonderful to attend the Australasian Neuromuscular Network #ANN on the “Sunshine Coast”. Thanks to Nicol Voermans for being a wonderful guest speaker, for two amazing presentations on #congenitalmyopathy in adulthood and #FSHD. Thanks also to Giovanni Baranello for a great Novartis-sponsored breakfast presentation on Zolgensma in #SMA. Thanks to all our sponsors including Novartis, Roche, Biogen, PTC Therapeutics, Inc., Epicrispr Biotechnologies, World Muscle Society, Medison Pharma and Sanofi. This conference would not be possible without your generous support. Five presentations from the Ravenscroft group at this meeting, including two on the patient day. Looking forward to Chairing a joint meeting of the #ANN and #AOMC in Perth in June 2026! #raredisease #patientadvocacy #myopathy #neuromusculardisease #CMTdisease

Here at the Perkins, we witness the power of human connection every day. Pam’s story is a remarkable example of how a moment of connection can spark incredible hope for the future. Pam is a self-described people person. She loves swimming at the beach and catching up with friends for a coffee and a chat. Community involvement is important to her, so she volunteers with a group called Inner Wheel to fundraise for important causes. Pam is also part of the Silver Linings family and has left a gift to the Perkins in her Will. Pam's connection to the Perkins began during a community tour. "I came to the Perkins with a group of very special ladies from Inner Wheel,” she remembers. We met up with a lovely guide called Judy. She took us around the Perkins, told us her personal story and showed us the research labs. When I saw what was happening in some of the labs and all the research that's going on with regards to genetic disorders, cancer, and heart disease, I was blown away by it all. I decided there and then I would love to offer support of my own. So, when I heard about the fact that I could leave some money in my Will to the research, I decided that was the way to go.” That decision became even more important to Pam when she was later diagnosed with bladder cancer. This diagnosis turned an already heartfelt decision into a very personal one. Pam is making it her mission to improve health for future generations. She reminds us that all it takes is one connection to create meaningful change, and that might be the most important gift of all. This month, we’re partnering with Safewill to offer you the chance to write your Will for free. Visit https://lnkd.in/gFruvWJV to get started today, or contact Ann at the Perkins on ann@perkins.org.au if you want to know more about how a gift in your Will can make a difference. #HumanConnection #CommunityInvolvement #HopeForTheFuture #Perkins #InnerWheel #SupportResearch #CancerAwareness

Look, it can’t be a perfect day on the fairway every day. But despite some less-than-perfect scores, Royal Perth Golf Club (RPGC) members still turned up in force to show their support for vital medical research. And while a few of the shots may not bear it out, the numbers certainly do: with a $50,000 goal, the RPGC Charity Challenge 2025 blew that estimate out of the water, with more than $87,000 being raised to help Perkins researchers fight one of the deadliest cancers in the world: melanoma. Western Australia has one of the highest rates of melanoma in the world, with over 1,300 people diagnosed each year. It is also the cancer most likely to affect 15 to 39-year-olds. We could not be more thankful to the club and its members; they have shown their passionate support for the Perkins consistently over the years, with this latest event being yet another stellar example of local giving. While melanoma remains one of the deadliest cancers, there are a number of things you can do to prevent it, including protecting your skin from the sun by seeking shade; wearing sun-protective clothing, a broad-brimmed hat, and sunglasses; and applying broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 50 or higher) regularly.
