The Perron Institute for Translational and Neurological Science, formerly the Western Australian Neuroscience Research Institute, is Western Australia's longest established medical research institute and has facilities within the QEII Medical Centre and Murdoch University. The STEMXX SISTERS event in Bunbury on the weekend was a great event organised by Annabel Kanakis from Bunbury Catholic College. Three Perron Institute PhD candidates and a postdoctoral researcher attended and said they enjoyed going to speak to all the young girls and hope they have inspired some to consider a career in neuroscience. #ScienceWeek

Perron Institute Clinic physiotherapist Claire Tucak has qualified as a Level 1 International Wheelchair Curling Classifier, which has enabled Curling Australia to send its first Wheelchair Mixed Curling team to compete at the 2024 World Wheelchair B Curling Championships in Lohja, Finland, in November. Claire completed World Curling's 2023 Wheelchair Classifier course in Canada. Claire's qualification, which adds to her expertise as an international classifier in athletics and wheelchair rugby, has been instrumental in the advancement of Wheelchair Curling. Well done Claire, and everyone at Curling Australia and Paralympics Australia for your support in establishing a classifier in Australia.

Her research on supporting family carers and bereavement care has influenced policy and practice worldwide. Her awards include the 2003 Centenary Medal from the Australian Prime Minister, the 2018 Medal for Excellence from the European Society for Person Centred Healthcare, the 2023 WA Australian of the Year, and the 2024 Lifetime Achievement Award from MND Australia. The Perron Institute is running the MIDAS2 study (Modafinil In Debilitating Fatigue After Stroke) and are looking for people who have severe persisting fatigue after stroke. The study will test whether the wakefulness medication called Modafinil, taken for 56 days, is safe and can alleviate stroke-related fatigue in a much larger group of stroke survivors.
