Well, the #FutureIsBright for the communication profession going by the clever, talented and engaged students at University of Technology Sydney. IABC New South Wales joined forces with the UTS Society of Communications (UTSoC) for a special panel discussion on 'Careers in Strategic Communication'. The panel was introduced by Distinguished Professor Jim Macnamara and hosted by Aya M. and Mahir Munot from #UTSoC. The panel included a cross-section of IABC members in various industries and stages in their career. Special thanks to panellists Lucy Newcomb, Chris Saxby, Sandra Hilmer and Calvin Lu for sharing your wisdom and insights with the students. Some takeaways: ✅ All experience is good experience. It doesn’t matter if it’s in communication. Employers are looking for early career professionals with work experience who demonstrate drive and show initiative. ✅ Put yourself out there. Build networks. These can be anywhere from work associates to family and friends. ✅ Say yes to opportunities. You never know where they could lead. ✅ Take charge of your career. Identify organisations where you would like to work and approach them. All they can say is no, but they may also say yes. ✅ Find mentors to give you career advice. People want you to succeed. ⭐ IABC NSW Mentoring Program ⭐️ Seeking Expressions of Interest Mentors are an excellent way to build long-term relationships with a trusted career adviser. In 2025, IABC NSW is launching a Mentoring Program. Students at the event were given the opportunity to express their interest in the program. Likewise, if you are a seasoned communication professional and #IABCNSW member looking to share your extensive experience with emerging talent, we’d like to hear from you. Please send us 200 words on why you would like to be a mentor to students and early career professionals. Tell us what you would like to get from the experience. Please email contact@iabcnsw.com by Friday 1 November.
