Building strong, sustainable Martu communities
About us
Kanyirninpa Jukurrpa (KJ) is a Martu organisation created in 2005 to achieve three objectives: to preserve Martu culture; to build a viable, sustainable economy in Martu communities; and to build realistic pathways for young Martu to a healthy and prosperous future. In addressing these high-level objectives, KJ runs a suite of cultural, environmental and social programs in Martu communities and in Newman. These programs address a diverse array of issues and include many aspects of cultural knowledge preservation, a substantial ranger program and associated land management programs and programs addressing a myriad social issues including early childhood and adult education, reduction of incarceration, substance abuse and governance. These programs seek to provide employment while preserving the deep Martu relationship with their country, maintaining the natural and cultural values of that country, creating greater Martu capacity to engage with Western agencies and developing Martu-led approaches to entrenched social problems. Due to the dominant focus on preservation of the natural and cultural values of Martu country, KJ’s programs are directed predominantly, although not exclusively, to Martu living in or near the Martu native title determination.

Martu jiji (child) Cizaide became ninti (knowledgeable) about the bush tucker food warlpurru from Elder Nola Taylor. Under Nola's guidance, Cizaide learned to identify, collect, open and eat this traditional bush food treat. This intergenerational exchange, supported by the KJ Women and Families Program, showcases the first of five domains guiding the program. Developed by Martu, these domains shape strategies and activities to fit with Martu culture and address community needs. The first domain focuses on teaching, learning, and preserving Martu cultural knowledge. Through hands-on experiences like this, Martu jiji develop a strong sense of cultural identity and connection to their Country. By learning traditional skills, they ensure their culture remains strong and vibrant for generations to come. 📸: Elder Nola Taylor shows Cizaide how to open warlpurru; Traditional tucker treat warlpurru; Warlpurru growing on vine. #KJWomenAndFamiliesProgram #IntergenerationalLearning #CulturalLearning #MartuKids #LittleVoicesLoudFutures #GrowingMinds #ConnectionToCountry #BushTucker #BushFoods #IndigenousKnowledge #TraditionalKnowledge #StrongInCulture #OnCountryLearning National Indigenous Australians Agency SNAICC - National Voice for our Children The Ian Potter Foundation Paul Ramsay Foundation Sabine Winton MLA

📸 Check out these great photos from the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences & Engineering Awards Gala where KJ Martu Rangers Carol and Emilisha Williams accepted the 2024 Traditional Knowledge Innovation Award on behalf of KJ. This award recognises our collaboration with Dr. Fiona Walsh and The University of Western Australia. By combining traditional Martu knowledge with scientific research, the study unlocked the mystery of ‘fairy circles’ and revealed the secrets of linyji (termite pavements) in the Western Deserts. KJ Martu Ranger Carol shared about her work on the linyji project since 2016, highlighting intergenerational knowledge transfer. Carol learned about linyji from both her grandmothers and now teaches younger Martu, like her niece Emilisha, helping to keep this cultural knowledge strong for future generations. Congratulations to Martu Elders, KJ Martu Rangers, Dr. Fiona Walsh, and The University of Western Australia for this well-deserved recognition! 🎉🏆 Head over to our website to learn more about the Award Gala night and this incredible project. https://lnkd.in/gGjmYiKa #KJMartuRangers #IndigenousKnowledge #TwoWayLearning #TwoWayScience #DesertEcology #AustralianLandscape National Indigenous Australians Agency Country Needs People Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water CSIRO The Nature Conservancy in Australia The Pew Charitable Trusts Roger Cook Tony Buti Malarndirri McCarthy Reece Whitby Tanya Plibersek

#DidYouKnow: Martu Country is ngurra (home) to 50% of Western Australia's and 30% of Australia's greater bilby recovery sites. This highlights the crucial role Martu play in protecting this vulnerable Australian species. KJ Martu Rangers from Parnngurr recently collected cameras they had placed near mankarr (greater bilby) burrows in Karlamilyi National Park. Using their traditional knowledge and expert tracking skills, the rangers identified areas of recent mankarr activity. They had set up these cameras a month earlier to gain insights into mankarr behaviour and social interactions. 📸: KJ Martu Rangers Tisharnee and Cleroy collect camera monitoring mankarr (greater bilby). #KJMartuRangers #Mankarr #GreaterBilby #Conservation #CaringForCountry #TwoWayScience #KarlamilyiNationalPark Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water

We are thrilled and honoured to receive the 2024 Traditional Knowledge Innovation Award at the #ATSEAwards! 🏆 Our collaboration with Dr Fiona Walsh and The University of Western Australia has revealed the secrets of linyji (termite pavements) in Australia's Western Deserts. By combining Traditional Knowledge with scientific research, we've unlocked the mystery of these 'fairy circles' covering 18% of Australia! This breakthrough shows the power of working together across cultures to understand our unique ecosystems. It highlights how Indigenous knowledge can drive scientific discoveries and deepen our understanding of Australia's amazing landscapes. We're proud that our KJ Martu Rangers, Carol and Emilisha Williams, travelled from Parnngurr to Melbourne to accept this prestigious award, alongside Dr Fiona Walsh and our KJ Healthy Country Officer Mattie. #IndigenousKnowledge #TwoWayScience #DesertEcology #AustralianLandscape Country Needs People Reece Whitby Tanya Plibersek CSIRO The Nature Conservancy in Australia The Pew Charitable Trusts
🏆 Live from the #ATSEAwards! 👏 The 2024 Traditional Knowledge Innovation Award goes to Kanyirninpa Jukurrpa, a community organisation of the Martu people of the Eastern Pilbara, and Dr Fiona Walsh for uncovering the mystery of Linyji or ‘fairy circles’ in Australia’s desert grasslands. The long-term collaboration blended Indigenous knowledge with scientific research, showing that huge amounts of climate and ecosystem data about Australia’s desert regions are maintained within Indigenous communities. 🌏 🔗 Read more: https://lnkd.in/gkXF8pzx

KJ Martu Rangers Brenda and Terry Sailor led a family trip back to the Country their ancestors once walked. It was an important trip for the family, bringing multiple generations together to connect and share traditional knowledge, Martu Wangka (language), and stories. Guided by the older rangers, the family worked to keep ninti (knowledge) strong. They recorded language and traditional knowledge while caring for their Country the right way. This included cleaning out the waterholes visited, conducting cultural burning, managing feral animals, and looking after threatened species. These activities strengthen connections to family and Country and inspire younger generations to continue this vital work. #KJMartuRangers #MartuWangka #ConnectionToCountry #CaringForCountry #MartuCulture #KeepingMartuCultureStrong #Martu #CulturalKnowledge #TraditionalKnowledge #MartuWay
