The Federal Court has formally recorded the life stories and experiences of a number of elders in a landmark hearing in Western Australia's far north. The process of waiting to collect testimonies for claims after lodgement has resulted in the loss of invaluable knowledge and experiences as elders die. Karajarri traditional owners say they hope the achievement will pave the way for other Indigenous people to have their knowledge preserved and their histories told. As reported by Rosanne Maloney for Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) to read the entire article please click on the link in the comments section below. #nativetitle #evidence #Traditionalowners #culturalheritage #preservation #knowledge #westernaustralia #federalcourt

For the past five years Jawoyn leaders have been fighting Parks Australia after a walking track at Gunlom Falls brought tourists within 10m of a “hidden” men’s site, which opened in 2019, despite Jawoyn advising Parks to build the path a further 30m away. During an on Country Local Court hearing in October, Parks Australia pleaded guilty to the illegal works and was slapped with a $200k fine, the largest ever sacred site penalty in the Territory’s history. For some Jawoyn, Gunlom has inspired calls for a ‘divorce’ potentially radically shifting the World Heritage Site’s management. However despite their hurt, all of the Jawoyn leaders said they were cautiously hopeful the relationship could be restored. See link in the comments section below to read the entire article. Reported by Zizi Averill and published in the Cairns Post. Increased land management by Aboriginal people in southeastern Australia around 6,000 years ago cut forest shrub cover in half, according to our new study of fossil pollen trapped in ancient mud. Deep-time research shows how important Indigenous cultural practices were for reducing dangerous high-intensity fires. It also suggests a way forward in Australia’s current fire crisis, which climate change is making worse. Authors: Michela Mariana, Anna Florin, Haidee Cadd, Matthew A. The Kimberley Land Council has raised significant concerns with WA's Minister for Mines and Petroleum regarding the state government's failure to fulfill critical commitments on fracking in the region. In response to the 2018 final report from the Independent Scientific Panel Inquiry into Hydraulic Fracture Stimulation (fracking), the WA government released an implementation plan in July 2019 outlining 20 key actions aimed at implementing the inquiry's recommendations. More than five years on, half of these actions remain unfulfilled, including critical measures such as the right of consent for Traditional Owners (Action 5a) and an enforceable code of practice (Action 11). Kimberley Land Council chief executive Tyronne Garstone called for a halt on all fracking proposals until the key actions in the implementation plan are fully enacted. Today (31 Oct 2024) Jamie Lowe spoke on a panel at the International Mining and Resources (IMARC) conference on Gadigal Country (Sydney), on a panel with First Nations colleagues from Australia and Canada. The panel heard key lessons from Canada's First Nations Projects Coalition and how First Nations in Australia need more access to Capital and equity ownership opportunities, in addition to how equity is one path towards respecting the right to Free, Prior and Informed Consent. Mr Lowe spoke about the Dhawura Ngilan Business and Investor Initiative, inviting the audience to download the Guides and work beyond Australian legislation not fit for purpose in protecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural heritage, and to follow a respectfully designed First Nations led pathway for the conservation of our unique Indigenous heritage. The Guides can be found here: https://lnkd.in/ed38HmvJ The NNTC thanks IMARC for opportunity to present to this important audience. #conference #mining #FPIC #culturalheritage #indigenousrights
