We are a collaborative home that helps to enhance, protect, and restore kelp forest ecosystems.

About us

Kelp forests cover a third of the world’s coastlines and support hundreds of millions of people, but they are disappearing. The Kelp Forest Alliance is a knowledge driven not for profit that advances the preservation and restoration of the world’s kelp forests. We conduct targeted research into how to increase connections to kelp forests, prevent kelp forest loss, and how to bring it back once it is gone. Further, we bring together information, persons, and organizations working on kelp forest ecosystems around the globe to create a community of practice which learns and shares information across cultural, professional, and linguistic boundaries. This community currently hosts 600 people from 320 organisations from 25 countries around the world. We are a supporting member of the UN Decade for Ecosystem Restoration, have represented kelp forests at global events such as COP28 for the UNFCCC, COP16 for the CBD, and The UN Ocean Conference.

  • The "State of the World's #Kelp Forests" #SoWK report offers an in-depth look at one of the planet's most vital yet underappreciated #ecosystems. Kelp forests span 1/3 of our coastlines providing essential services such as carbon sequestration, supporting marine biodiversity, and generating billions of dollars through fisheries and tourism. Despite their importance, kelp forest conservation is underfunded while facing significant threats from climate change, overfishing, and habitat destruction. This report compiles the latest research and data on the health of kelp forests worldwide, and finds that 16% of the biome is under some level of protection while only 2% of the Kelp Forest Challenge has been achieved. It also highlights the socio-economic importance of these ecosystems and the urgent need for global conservation efforts to meet the targets set by the #KelpForestChallenge and the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework #30x30). Whether you're a policymaker, researcher, or environmentally curious, this report provides the knowledge and tools necessary to support kelp forest conservation and restoration. Download it to stay informed and take action to protect these incredible ecosystems. https://lnkd.in/gJan_HsE
