It is alarming that the ocean is losing oxygen, termed ocean deoxygenation, at a rapid rate due to climate change and pollution. 📢 Opening soon: applications for the second edition of the Mário Ruivo Memorial Lecture! Endorsed by the #OceanDecade and promoted by UNESCO Ocean, EurOcean and the Portuguese Government, this initiative intends to recognise early career ocean researchers’ contribution to the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development – particularly Sustainable Development Goal 14 on "Life Below Water" – and to the objectives of the Ocean Decade. This initiative is a homage to Professor Mário Ruivo’s long-life commitment to ocean science and the sustainability of the ocean, and his significant contributions to the work of IOC, most notably ocean knowledge, governance, capacity development, literacy, and international cooperation. The selected early career ocean professional will present their work at the next UNESCO Ocean Assembly in 2025.
