The UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development will deliver the science we need for the ocean we want.

À propos

The United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030) (Ocean Decade) will stimulate ocean science and knowledge generation to reverse the decline of the state of the ocean system and catalyse new opportunities for sustainable development. The vision of the Ocean Decade is ‘the science we need for the ocean we want’. The Ocean Decade provides a convening framework for scientists and stakeholders from diverse sectors to develop the scientific knowledge and the partnerships needed to accelerate and harness advances in ocean science to achieve a better understanding of the ocean system, and deliver science-based solutions to achieve the 2030 Agenda. The UN General Assembly mandated UNESCO's Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) to coordinate the preparations and implementation of the Decade.

📢 Just published: The report "Ambition, Action, Impact: the Ocean Decade Pathway to 2030 - Consolidated Outcomes of the Vision 2030 Process" identifies science, knowledge, capacity, resources, and infrastructure priorities that are needed to achieve a successful Ocean Decade. The #OceanDecade aims to transform the way that ocean science and knowledge is generated and used, and thus precipitate a shift from the ocean we have to the ocean we want by 2030. The Vision 2030 process, implemented over a period of twelve months in the lead-up to the 2024 Ocean Decade Conference, was centred around the ten Ocean Decade Challenges – which represent the most immediate and pressing needs for ocean knowledge – as a participatory and iterative process aimed at setting a tailored and specific strategic ambition, or ‘end goal’, and associated milestones for each Challenge. ➡️ Launched at the #AAORIAForum2024 today, this report summarises the key findings and outcomes of this process, and outlines a pathway to deliver the science we need for the ocean we want by 2030. Download it here: https://lnkd.in/grntB9WS 🤝 We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the Vision 2030 Working Group members for their invaluable contributions to this important Ocean Decade process.

#SundaySpecies: Dive into the mystery of the Big Red Jellyfish (Tiburonia granrojo)! First spotted off the California coast in 1998 by MBARI scientists, it was then formally announced as a new species in 2003. While it has since been spotted across the Pacific Ocean – from Baja California to Hawaii and Japan – it remains an elusive, mysterious, and little-known deep-sea creature. 🦑 Unlike most jellies, Big Red has thick oral arms instead of long tentacles. It can grow up to almost 1 meter across, serving as a true reminder of the ocean’s hidden wonders and the mysteries still waiting to be explored. 👀 Have you ever heard of other rare deep-sea creatures? 🎥: Video by #OceanDecade actor MBARI

It was quite the wrap #fornature and #fortheocean at the Global Nature Positive Summit 2024 this week in Sydney, Australia. Congratulations to Summit organisers, hosts and delegates who ensured the #oceanvoice 📣 had many moments at #GNPS2024 Opening with a stunning Welcome to Country by Uncle Allen Madden set the tone for sharing culture, heritage and connection to nature. At this moment in human history our awareness of that connection is on the frontline. We are the Nature - we are not separate from it. It was my great privilege to moderate the #OceanPlenary, with a star panel including: Vidar Helgesen ~ UNESCO & UN Ocean Decade 🌊 Her Excellency Ilana Seid United Nations Permanent Representative of Palau & Co-Chair of the High Level Panel for a Sustainable Ocean Economy 🌊 Filimon Manoni Pacific Ocean Commissioner 🌊 and two Australian Ocean Icons: the divine David Carter CEO of Austral Fisheries 🌊 and the inimitable Valerie Taylor. Uncle Allen welcomed us in a way that allowed for our truest selves to come to Gadigal land, so I brought a woven Tongan mat from home with me on Day 2 so our Ocean Panel could use the custom of ‘Talanoa’ for our discussion. In Pacific culture, when we Talanoa we sit together, we recognise our differences and we navigate those in an inclusive, peaceful and respectful way. There is no predetermined end point. The weaving of the mat is symbolic of relationships and the strength of them and I will say that my panelists were Courageous and Real as we sat and spoke and untangled knots, together and the weave... well, it tightened. Charting our future in the ocean holds tension. This tension was alive on our panel, because we faced into the facts - humans impact the Ocean Realm - there is no getting out of it. And so, there is no getting out the fact that if we wish to live on a planet where nature can continue to support us we must ask ourselves - all 8 billion of us - how can we re-wire our relationship with nature? This means re-wiring the systems we humans have created - including financial, governance and legal frameworks, the ways we educate and share knowledge, and who we listen too - young people, elders, First Nations, people whose livelihoods rely on nature, and people whose lives are in that frontline. This first Global Nature Positive Summit was an opportunity to sit together and recognise that in order to weave our way back to nature we will need all parts of society to contribute. It will take inclusive, patient yet urgent change and action. I left uplifted, and more - we can do it. #fornature #fortheocean #effectiveprotection #sustainableproduction #equitableprosperity #talanoa #untieknotstogether

What's your marine identity? New research suggests that people’s deep connection with the ocean – their “marine identity” – can help us reset society’s relationship with the seas. Led by Dr. Pamela Buchan from ExeterMarine at the University of Exeter with a diverse, international group of marine researchers and practitioners, this research defines marine identity as: “An identity rooted in how the ocean as a place supports the sense of self.” This is the first time that an international, cross-cultural definition of marine identity has been agreed upon. This research is the culmination of a project that was endorsed as an #OceanDecade Activity and by the EU Mission Ocean and is a key contribution to Decade Challenge 10, which aims to restore society's relationship with the ocean.
