Supporting our veterans’ families.

About us

In 1923 Legacy made a promise to help veterans’ families carry on with their lives after the loss or injury of their loved one. It was a simple promise that Legacy keeps today; providing the same stability, guidance and assistance that a partner would normally provide to his or her family. Today, Legacy supports 40,000 partners and children of veterans who gave their lives or health serving our country. Our work can mean a child gets an education and a fair go, a widow is not disadvantaged and alone and a family is not torn apart by the effects of post-traumatic stress or other psychological injuries.

When you sign up for The Legacy Challenge, you'll be supporting families like Mia's. Mia’s dad gave a lot in service to our nation. For almost 10 years, he served in the Australian Army’s 3rd Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment, including on the frontline in East Timor. Then tragically, when Mia was six, her beloved father took his life. Legacy has been part of Mia’s life since then. Some of her fondest childhood memories are of attending Legacy Christmas parties and Legacy Youth Camps. "Talking to Legacy’s Youth Leaders at camp about my story made me feel safe, comfortable, and less alone. I was able to talk about the feelings I had and not feel judged for how I felt as they understood my pain,” says Mia. As she got older, Mia paid it forward by becoming a Youth Leader herself and has attended many Legacy events for families and kids, including the Legacy Youth Camp. Mia, now in her second year of Uni and studying to be a teacher, was recently named as Legacy’s 2024 Youth Ambassador. Mia’s younger sister Chloe, also volunteers her time at family events. The Legacy Challenge is your chance to give back to those families who have made the ultimate sacrifice and do your bit to support our veterans’ kids. Each year on September 14th, we commemorate National Peacekeepers' Day. On this day in 1947, Australia became the world's first peacekeepers to deploy to the field, in the Netherlands East Indies (now Indonesia). Since then, tens of thousands of Australians have served in peacekeeping missions, with 16 making the ultimate sacrifice. This day is dedicated to honouring and remembering their service and sacrifice. A big big thank you to all of our amazing volunteers who supported us during Legacy Week! This includes our volunteers from the Australian Defence Force, school kids, cadets, scouts, corporate partners, Legatees and all others who were out in the community. The week would not have been possible without the time you dedicated, raising funds for our veterans' families. Here are some highlights! The time for action is now. Legacy has written an open letter to Parliament in response to the Final Report of the Royal Commission into Defence and Veteran Suicide. Legacy wants to see the Australian Government act with urgency upon the 122 recommendations, particularly the establishment of a new statutory entity to oversee system reform. Our veterans and their families should not be forgotten. Meet Evie! Evie volunteered her time before her school day with her dad Geoff during Legacy Week. She raised almost $1,000 during their shift, selling badges and bears for our veterans’ families. Thank you Geoff for introducing giving back to the next generation of fundraisers for Legacy! Thank you Evie (plus Geoff and RPS) for supporting veterans’ families this Legacy Week. #LittleBadgeBigImpact #LegacyWeek2024

Today is World Suicide Prevention Day, which is an important day following the release of the Final Report of the Royal Commission into Defence and Veteran Suicide. This report provides important insights and recommendations that are critical to the health and wellbeing of veterans and their families moving forward. Legacy is hopeful the report will open up significant opportunities to better support veterans and their families pre- and post-discharge with the aim of reducing rates of suicide in our community. We would like to acknowledge those families that have experienced suicide first-hand and send out a message of hope and support. Here at Legacy, we firmly believe that every single person can play a role in preventing suicide every day, even a simple conversation can make a difference. "Service life, transition and postservice life affects all facets of family life and no one should have to face these demands alone." This quote was taken directly from the Final Report of the Royal Commission into Defence and Veteran Suicide, which was released today. The full report can be found here: https://lnkd.in/gtUncNyh To our families: we are here for you. We know that many of you shared your lived experience and relived your grief to improve the wellbeing of other Defence families. If you need support at this time, please reach out to your local Legacy club.
