It was a privilege to travel to Newcastle to witness 20 Aboriginal children undergoing surgery through the HEALS program under the care of Professor Kelvin Kong yesterday. Aboriginal children have the highest rates of middle ear disease in the world which can significantly impact development and overall health when not addressed promptly. The HEALS (Hearing Ear Health Language and Speech services) program is an initiative providing ENT, and speech-language pathology services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children. It’s not just about medical intervention; it’s about building trust and satisfaction within the community and removing barriers to accessing appropriate specialist health care. Yesterday, it enabled simple but life-changing surgeries to be provided at no cost to the families, offering surgical intervention at a crucial stage in these children’s development. It would not have been possible without a huge commitment from and wonderful collaboration with our incredible partners, which was moving to witness in action.
