Associate Professor, researcher and advisor. Goal setting, open goals, and the psychology of exceptional performance
New paper coming soon: "Is there a need for mental health informed goal setting in physical activity?" We examine whether there are risks that goal setting could unintentionally exacerbate mental health symptoms, and consider what mental health informed goal setting could look like in physical activity. Huge thanks to an excellent team of collaborators: Darren Wagner, Scott Goddard, Melanie Clarke, PhD, Grace McKeon, Simon Rosenbaum, Stewart Vella and Megan Teychenne 🙌 The full paper will be published (open access) soon in Mental Health and Physical Activity: https://lnkd.in/gwUZJkky Manna Institute Southern Cross University

Whether you are a researcher, business leader, service provider or working to improve community health, Manna’s inaugural symposium this December is THE place to be. Our exciting program brings together, for the very first time, an incredible mix of people active in the mental health space across NSW and around Australia. Join us as they share a breadth of perspectives and potential solutions – local, regional and national – to some of our nation’s greatest challenges. As well as showcasing Manna’s collective achievements – of which there are many – the symposium is your chance to learn what we have in store as our progressive institute continues to foster and apply meaningful research, and develop the professional mental health workforces so desperately needed. The symposium will feature an extensive workshop program, and state and national panels exploring mental health service delivery in rural, regional and remote Australia. It’s a powerful and very affordable opportunity for you to have conversations that matter, explore new collaborations, and to harness the momentum that’s building around Manna’s vital work. We look forward to seeing you, harbourside, from 4-6 December. Every day, nine Australians take their own lives. Nineteen years ago, John Brogden came very close to adding his name to these statistics. But John survived and, since his recovery, has become a passionate voice for mental health and suicide prevention. For ten years he was Chair of Lifeline Australia. He is now the Honorary President of LifeLine International. He urgently wants to talk openly about suicide to save lives and to give those in despair a way back to a happier life. John is in Tamworth and Armidale to share his story and those of the fifteen high profile people he interviewed in the book. There will be time for a Q&A, book sales and signing. On Wednesday, the First Nations Advisory Committee for the Australian Eating Disorders Research and Translation Centre, came together to discuss the significant gaps in research relating to Eating Disorders/Disordered Eating in First Nations Communities. It's common knowlege that good food is the key to maintinaing physical/mental health & wellbeing, and food insececurity is the source of numerous detrimental effects. Very soon, the #AEDRTC, #InsideOutInst & #FirstNationsCo will be imploring the #AusGov to work with us by increasing the funding in this vital work. #ChangeMaking Djurali Centre for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Research and Education Manna Institute Leilani Darwin
