    A Mater surgeon has saved the life of a Brisbane retiree after successfully removing a rare tumour from his liver weighing almost 2kg.   The 15cm hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) tumour is the largest Mater Private Hospital Brisbane liver surgeon Dr Joel Lewin has removed from a patient at the hospital.   Dr Lewin said patient Barrie Tibbetts would have died from the aggressive-growing tumour without urgent surgery.   Mr Tibbetts, 67, was unaware the mass had been growing in his liver until he saw his doctor for a routine check-up.   Read more about Mr Tibetts’ story here 👉 mater.li/liver-surgery

    Young people with an interest in mental health issues are invited to attend the State Library of Queensland for a conference from November 11-13. The “Connecting to our Future Youth” two-day event has been convened by experts from the Mater Young Adult Health Centre to inform youth health practice and research. Among the speakers will be Mater Young Adult Health Centre Youth Ambassador Claire Lee who suffers chronic pain from Developmental Hip Dysplasia (DHD) and Ehlers Danlos Syndrome (EDS) – a group of inherited disorders that mostly affect the skin, joints and blood vessels. Claire is on a mission to help other young Queenslanders living with debilitating illnesses to seek therapy and emotional support at Mater’s Young Adult Health Centre - the only service of its kind in Queensland.     Mater Private Hospital Mackay midwife Sarah Fordyce has proven it takes a dedicated team to ensure patients in the region receive access to high quality healthcare. The former accountant-turned-midwife was recognised as a “dedicated leader” at the annual Mater People Awards event held in South Brisbane on Friday 4 October. Each year, Mater recognises the outstanding achievements of Mater People across the Health, Education, Research and Foundation ministries at the Mater People Awards. The Midwifery Nurse Unit Manager won the Mater Early Career Excellence Award for achievements including collaborating with local educators to upskill team members and enhancing the maternity ward’s ability to support services during peak periods.     Our theatre expansion program is now complete, enabling us to provide care to additional 400 Redlands patients each month. More than 12 new specialists have joined the expanded Mater Private Hospital Redland and area taking referrals for orthopaedic, gastroenterology, paediatric and other services.
