  • “Everyone brings their best every day regardless of what they've got going on because we are all here for the women and the babies.”   Meet Amanda, an experienced midwife who has dedicated her career to caring for women and newborns at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital—the very place where she gave birth to her own children. 👶👶   Amanda’s journey into midwifery was inspired by her own experience—after having twins, she decided to go to university when they turned one. Since then, she has embraced every opportunity for growth, developing her skills across a variety of roles.   “I've done a lot of different roles in my career. So at the moment I backfill in patient flow, in lactation support and in safety and quality. So I'm never bored,” Amanda said.   Midwives do so much more than deliver babies. They provide essential care, education and emotional support to mothers throughout pregnancy, birth and postpartum. 🤰   “I love how inspiring my colleagues are. People work so incredibly hard and there is so much good will in this place. It's what keeps it going.”   Her own journey as a mother, especially having twins, has shaped the way she cares for women today. ❤️   “It made me realise how vulnerable mummies can be. I’m always very careful to keep that woman at the centre of my care, be respectful of her journey and practise with compassion.”   A big thank you to Amanda and all the amazing midwives at RBWH for supporting mothers and babies every day. 🙌

  • "As an Oral Health Therapist, I’m still learning every day—it’s truly rewarding." Meet Stephen, an Oral Health Therapist with 37 years of experience. 👋 Stephen works across two locations—the Oral Health Centre located in Herston and the Queensland Children’s Hospital—and plays a key role in the Cleft Lip and Palate Program, supporting patients from infancy to young adulthood. Stephen began his career as a Dental Therapist, later transitioning to Oral Health Therapy, where he expanded his scope to include preventive dentistry, public health, and orthodontic care. His role spans a variety of treatments, including routine dental care with an emphasis on preventing dental disease. He works closely with families, explaining the importance of maintaining oral health to prevent issues like tooth decay and infections, which are especially important for children who might not be able to eat or have special challenges. 🦷 “I work with families to ensure they understand how important it is to look after not just their child’s teeth, but the gum and bone structure that supports them,” said Stephen. Stephen’s career has been shaped by continuous learning. Whether it’s staying up-to-date on the latest in oral health or managing new syndromes, he remains passionate about expanding his knowledge and improving care for his patients. “I like to create an enjoyable setting because going to the dentist is a is a scary thing for some people. So if we can sort of create an environment that's enjoyable, then I think it's the starting block to creating a nice dental environment for the rest of that child's life.” For Stephen, creating lasting connections with families is just as important as the clinical care. He’s proud to be part of a team that provides consistent, personalised care, helping children and their families through long-term treatment journeys. ❤️ “I now see former patients bringing in their own children to start their journey. It’s a powerful reminder of the connections we make and the impact we have. Parents remember the care they received, and now they trust us to look after their children too.” Thank you, Dr Stephen, for your ongoing dedication and the care you show your patients. 👏

  • Meet Angel, a passionate Health Care Worker with the Redcliffe Ngarrama Maternity Program. 👋 “I love connecting, yarning, learning, supporting, and watching our families build strong and deadly families". Angel is also excited about some new changes and improvements coming soon to the Ngarrama service at Redcliffe. “Ngarrama is about healthcare, culture, community, and connection,” Angel said. The improvements mean Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families will receive full continuity of care from the same dedicated team every step of their pregnancy journey—from antenatal to birth and postnatal care. 👶🏽 We’ll be offering Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families care that’s tailored to their unique needs, honouring their traditions, and ensuring they feel supported and safe every step of the way. Metro North Health is looking for passionate midwives to work with Angel and the Ngarrama group. Find out more 👉 https://lnkd.in/gcK7EWSW

  • Tired of tossing and turning? It might be time to rethink your approach to sleep. 😴 TPCH is home to the some of the only adult sleep psychologists in Queensland - and Advanced Clinical Psychologist Sara is proud to be one of them! Currently working on her PhD in Sleep Disorders, Sara is focused on how sleep impacts our overall health and wellbeing. 🧠💤 "Sleep is fundamental to our wellbeing, and understanding how to treat sleep disorders is key to improving quality of life" says Sara. Insomnia is the most common sleep disorder Sara works with. To be diagnosed, you need to experience difficulty sleeping more than three nights a week for over three months. "I work with a range of sleep-related conditions, including Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA), parasomnia, and insomnia. A big misconception about sleep is that people often think medication is the first line of defence for sleep problems – but that’s not true. Cognitive Behaviour Therapy is." Quality sleep is essential for your health and wellbeing, and the right approach could make all the difference. 🙌

  • Essential services such as Community Palliative Care continue through all conditions, with some of our teams having to adapt with the weather. Community Palliative Care Service Clinical Nurse Albert said that the uncertainty and magnitude of the cyclone had the team preparing for all challenges, including the chance they might not get to a patient's home. "Many of our palliative care patients require medications at home which we regularly change. As part of the planning we ensured that all of our patients and their carers had ample stock of medications on hand to see them through the event and the weekend," he said.   "We identified which patients and carers would not be able to manage during the cyclone and made sure that they were transferred to hospital last week.   "At all times our patients and families had our support over the phone and online, and everyone's end-of-life care was delivered safely as planned and coordinated." ❤️🩹

  • Annie, a talented Rehabilitation Engineer at STARS, has been a rock star in her field for a year now all while studying a Masters in Bioengineering. Annie’s not just engineering solutions – she’s breaking barriers and inspiring the next generation! 🌍 Her passion for maths and science led her to find her true calling in engineering, and she’s loving every minute of it. “I’m so lucky to be part of a team that’s super supportive. My mentor Steph is so helpful, it's amazing to work in such a balanced and diverse team," said Annie. Despite the biases that still exist in the field, especially as a young woman in engineering, Annie is all about breaking stereotypes and showing that engineering is for EVERYONE! “My advice to young women wanting to get into a career in engineering is, don’t let the fear of being in a male-dominated field stop you. Find a supportive environment because perceptions won’t change until more women enter the field!” #ShoutoutSaturday 👏 to Annie and all our awesome women in STEM.

  • Meet Jon, one of our passionate medical entomologists here at Metro North Health. 🦟👨🔬   As a medical entomologist, Jon collects and studies mosquitoes to help prevent the spread of diseases to humans, making his work crucial to public health.   “I love science, and honestly… I really like mosquitoes. It’s always exciting to identify mosquitoes, especially when I come across a species I haven’t seen before.” Jon said.   While they might be fascinating to study, mosquitoes can carry some serious diseases, which can be passed to you through their bites.   'It's important to protect yourself when heading outdoors by wearing long sleeves and pants, keeping screens intact, and eliminating standing water around your home where mosquitoes breed.'   Thank you, Jon, and all our dedicated medical entomologists working tirelessly to keep the community safe. ✨ Via: Queensland Health

  • Not all heroes wear capes, some hand out handcrafted wooden flowers like Ross! 💐 When Tropical Cyclone Alfred was on its way, Ross had to remove the handcrafted wooden flowers that once brightened Brighton’s trees. But instead of letting them go to waste, he saw an opportunity to bring smiles to the community and spread a little joy. Made from pine and repurposed materials, the flowers are hand-painted by members of the Sandgate & District Men’s Shed and usually hang in clusters of three or four. 🌻 "In the past, we have received so many comments and compliments about how wonderful they look hanging in the trees," he said. Ross is the Secretary of the Sandgate & District Men’s Shed, located at Brighton Health Campus. The Shed is a vital part of the community, providing connection, support and creativity, especially for residents at Gannet House aged care facility. 🙌 Thank you Ross for helping to brighten people’s day and for all the support the Sandgate and District Men’s shed provides for the community. ❤️
