Mater Private Hospital Brisbane plastic and reconstructive surgeon Dr Diana Kennedy has successfully performed several life-changing surgeries to restore the function of four-year-old Lewis Porter's limbs. Lewis (4) was born with a rare congenital disorder known as Constriction Ring Syndrome, which affects one in 1200 newborns. Dr Diana Kennedy performed multiple surgeries on Lewis, the first when he was just seven months old, to release the bands constricting his limbs. Without the surgeries, Lewis' limbs may have required amputation due to ongoing nerve and vessel damage. Read more 👉 https://lnkd.in/g_zMgNNZ

While feelings of stress and anxiety are normal around natural disasters, sometime these can linger longer than we’d like. Mater Emotional Health Unit Nurse Practitioner Chris Leary warns that cases of ‘cyclone anxiety’ may arise, triggering low moods and anxiety in young adults and children. “Keep an eye out for changes in your child’s behaviour, including withdrawal from social situations, agitation, increased irritability, changes in sleeping or eating patterns, and complaining about aches and pains they have never had before,” he said. “If you have any concerns, talk to your GP in the first instance.” https://lnkd.in/g4RPsJD4

We have been so inspired by the strength and resilience shown across the community, but most particularly by our Mater People. Over 400 staff packed their pillows and sleeping bags to stay overnight and ensure our patients were cared for and essential services continued around the clock. From the Mater Education teams who converted classrooms into staff dormitories to the army of clinical and non-clinical staff who kept kitchens, wards, systems and switchboards operational, your hard work did not go unnoticed. We are truly grateful. You are champions 💙 #cyclonealfred #materpeople

Slam dunking into healthcare careers! 🏀 Young and talented Townsville Fire Academy players traded their uniforms for scrubs and experienced some hands-on action at Mater Private Hospital Townsville recently. From learning about wound care and physiotherapy to rehabilitation, the players had a taste of life as a healthcare worker. Mater is a proud sponsor of the basketball team and in supporting players to thrive both on and off the court 💪 A shoutout to Mater’s Allied Health team in Townsville for inspiring the next generation. 🙌 #townsvillefire #physio #Alliedhealth

A new study at Mater Hospital Brisbane is giving hope to Multiple Sclerosis (MS) sufferers. The TAURUS.2 study targets brain cells with electromagnetic waves in a process known as repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS). Director of Neurosciences Dr Andrew Swayne said the trial could potentially enable MS patients to regain their quality of life. “It ventures into an area that, so far, has proven out of reach for the MS population – maintaining or repairing health status,” Dr Swayne said. Find out more about the trial here 👉 mater.li/ms-stim
