As one of Australia’s largest health companies, we see the human cost of the mental health crisis and want to play a meaningful part of the solution. But we recognise there is no single solution. We don’t have all the answers, and we cannot do this alone, which is why we are collaborating with batyr, Black Dog Institute, Flying Fox and Orygen so we can work together to find solutions. We’ve also partnered with News Corp Australia on an awareness campaign “Can We Talk?” to help Australian families better tackle mental wellbeing in the home. Over the next 4 months, we’ll be tapping into the expertise we have at Medibank, including psychiatrists, psychologists and our mental health reference group, sharing tips on how people can look after their own mental health and wellbeing, as well as the mental health of their loved ones. And we’re investing an extra $50 million over the next 5 years into a range of mental health initiatives to help improve the state of mental health for our customers and for all people in Australia. During this time, we’ll be progressively implementing a range of innovative initiatives that aim to improve outcomes, access and experiences. Across families and friendship groups, schools and workplaces, millions of people are being impacted by mental health challenges. And as more people look for support, our system is at breaking point - in fact, in many parts it’s broken - despite governments spending more on mental health than ever before. As a health company, we want to play a meaningful role in improving the mental health of Australia. Today, we have announced we’re investing an extra $50 million over the next 5 years to improve mental healthcare access, innovation and prevention and are working together with organisations including batyr, Black Dog Institute, and Orygen. While there is no single solution, we need to start by ensuring access to the right care at the right time for those that need it. And we need to remove the stigma around mental health and get more comfortable with talking openly with our family, our friends and our colleagues. We invested almost $1 million in health research in 2024 to support the health and wellbeing of our customers and everyone in Australia. New models of primary healthcare, on-the-job training for First Nations trainees, updating The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) guideline for managing knee and hip osteoarthritis, and information resources for female runners – these are just some of the projects we supported last year. A growing number of Aussies are starting their Christmas and New Years Day differently – connecting with their community at special parkrun events and helping to stamp (or walk, run or volunteer!) out loneliness. Medibank research shows that one in 3 Australians feel high levels of loneliness, but many of us find it difficult to recognise loneliness in both ourselves and in others. For many, the holiday season can unmask stronger feelings of loneliness or isolation that the busyness of the year kept at bay. Providing an antidote to loneliness, parkrun welcomes people of all ages and fitness levels to gather and connect with their community each Saturday. And the good news is, running is optional! Find a parkrun taking place on Wednesday 25th December 2024 and Wednesday 1st January 2025 here: https://lnkd.in/e4smGKV
